Abstract:In our modern society, English is used as an international language and communication tool, and it plays a more and more important role in the world. University students are regarded as the pioneers of modern information and it is self-evident that English is one of the important channels to get information. However, from the four basic skills of English --listening, speaking, reading and writing, writing needs the most comprehensive knowledge, the strongest application, and the most difficult training. In order to find out the problems which exist in the cultivation of writing ability of college students, the author had a survey in an Experimental Class of Tianjin University of Finance and Economics in China trying to find out the problems college students encounter in English writing. The data have been gathered from the writing assignments of all the students in one term last year. The focus of this investigation is to analyze the grammatical mistakes in English writing, explore the systematic reasons and finally put forward some corresponding solutions to improve college English writing.
With a view to finding out the current situation of college English writing, the authors conducted a survey in their university. It is found that students have some problems in sentence effectiveness, mainly on coherence. As a result this essay will mainly focus on the analysis of the syntactical problem on coherence in college English writing, then explore the main reasons for the problem in students' writing to help them improve their English writing.
The paper analyses J. K. Rowling's Commencement Address at Harvard University from the perspective of functional linguistics.Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics is considered as the analysis framework of this paper. This framework divides language function into three parts: ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. The author analyses the discourse from the transitivity system of the ideational function which includes six processes. Through the analysis, it attempts to help readers to understand the features of the lecturer and the thematic meaning of this speech from a different angle.
Abstract:For Chinese college students, writing is a pretty weak point of learning English, which was typically embodied by the Chinglish that appears frequently in English compositions. The thesis aims to analyze the specific examples of the Chinglish based on the writing assignment by Chinese college students. Furthermore, the solutions and strategies of correcting the Chinglish in English writing are put forward.
English writing, a crucial medium of language communication, is a skill which needs comprehensive use of knowledge and the most challenging one for L2 learners among the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. With a view to finding out the current situation of English writing by Chinese postgraduates, the author conducted a survey in the university. It is found that the postgraduate students have some problems in sentence effectiveness, namely conciseness, emphasis and variety. Therefore, this thesis will mainly focus on the analysis of the common syntactical problems in English writing from those three aspects, and then the countermeasures will be found out to help them improve their writing.
