Objective: Smoking is a common habit and an important public health problem in our country. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of smoking and to investigate the factors affecting them among nurses working in hospitals in Muş city. Materials and Methods: The population of this descriptive and cross-sectional study is composed of all nurses who work in the hospitals in the province of Muş city. In the study, 436 of the 600 nurses were reached. The questionnaire form was prepared by using the related literature. Results: 64.6% of the nurses included in the study were female and the average age was 26.58 ± 6.00 years. 42.2% of the nurses were married. 61.9% of the nurses experienced smoking at least once and 52.8% of them still smoke. It was found that the reasons for smoking were relieving stress in the first place, habit in the second place. The rate of smoking among nurses increases with age (p<0.05) and smoking rate was higher in males (p<0.05). As the education level increases, the rate of smoking decreases (p<0.05). Smoking rate was found higher in hookah smokers and nurses whose mothers smoke. Conclusion: Among the nurses, rates of smoking are determined high compared to the society. The rate of smoking should be decreased and the necessary precautions should be taken by taking the reasons increasing smoking into considerations.
