Translation, adaptation, and validation of a questionnaire on motivation and disposition towards writing and its use in the study of self-perceptions of whole classes and multilingual students
This paper summarizes the process of translation and validation of a questionnaire about disposition towards writing for primary and middle school students. We followed two validation phases -the first one focused on the comprehensibility of the items, the second one on the internal consistency of the tool- and finally we obtained a simple and easily usable questionnaire for both educational and research contexts. Not all subscales were strong consistent, so further refinements are needed. We subsequently used the questionnaire in a study about motivational and linguistic effects of a language education project on 122 5th and 8th-grade students (experimental group), then compared with 104 same-age pupils (control group). We analyzed both entire groups and multilingual pupils only. Students individually wrote a narrative text (analyzed through holistic scales about content, comprehensibility, coherence, and cohesion) and then filled out the questionnaire. The linguistic results, better for the experimental group, suggest that the Project's methodology is a good starting point to increase skills homogeneously and to reduce linguistic inequalities. The self-perception results leave open several hypotheses, which require further findings to be confirmed or denied.
