En las últimas dos décadas del siglo XX el ingreso a la carrera docente ha sido un tema recurrente en las políticas educativas en diversas regiones, la tendencia ha sido incorporar esquemas meritocráticos centrados en evaluaciones estandarizadas. Este escrito deriva de un proceso de investigación cualitativa mediante la técnica de relatos de vida, tiene como propósito analizar la inserción de egresadas de una escuela Normal a la carrera docente en el marco de la política educativa en México. Entre los hallazgos destaca que el sistema de valoración multifactorial implementado para la selección de docentes, si bien integra indicadores cualitativos y cuantitativos que pretenden garantizar un sistema justo y equitativo para el ingreso a la carrera docente, en su operatividad presenta grandes dificultades técnicas, de estructura e interpretación para la evaluación global de los participantes. Se concluye que los sistemas para el ingreso a la carrera docente centrados en el mérito encuentran su talón de Aquiles en no saber cómo evaluar el mérito, las formas que se han implementado develan condiciones de desigualdad e inequidad entre los participantes.
