Festival 1964 wurde zu einer Imponierenden Manifestation vergangener und gegenwärtiger musikalischer Stilrichtungen. Der konservativ eingestellte Hörer konnte sich an einer grandiosen Aufführung von Beethovens 9. Symphonie durch das Concertgebouw-Orchester unter Otto Klemperer sowie an den beiden von Karajan geleiteten, triumphal aufgenommenen Konzerten unserer Philharmoniker erfreuen, die Schöpfungen von Mozart, Beethoven, Richard Strauss' "Don Juan" und Bruckners 7. Symphonie in vollendeter Wiedergabe erklingen ließen. Zwei repräsentative Cegenwartskomponisten kamen auf den Opernbühnen zu Wort: Schostakowitsch mit seinem durch die Zagreber Oper aufgeführten Jugendwerk "Katarina Ismailowa" und Benjamin Britten mit seiner von der English Opera Group interpretierten Kammeroper "Curlew River". Die Oper des russischen Komponisten, die bekanntlich in seiner Heimat bald vom Repertoire verschwand, da ihre kühne avantgardistische Tonsprache und ihr krudes Libretto das Mißfallen maßgebender Kreise erregten, fand ebenso ungeteilten Beifall wie die feinziselierte Partitur Brittens. Nachhaltige Eindrücke hinterließ auch eine vorbildliche Aufführung von Brittens "War-Requiem", die unter Mitwirkung des Komponisten stattfand. Die Solopartien waren einer Sänger-Elite (Galina Vishnevskaja, Peter Pears und Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) anvertraut. Die groß dimensionierten Darbietungen, denen auch eine sehr bemerkenswerte Aufführung von Glucks "Iphigenie auf Tauris", in welcher Gre Brouwenstijn prächtig die Titelrolle sang, zuzuzählen ist, wurden durch Soloabende weltberühmter Künstler ergänzt. Rostropovich stellte seine Meisterschaft in den Dienst Bachscher Cellowerke, Svjatoslav Richter widmete seinen enthusiastisch aufgenommenen Klavierabend ausschließlich Kompositionen Schuberts. Der hohe Rang, den das Holland-Festival durch das Niveau und die Vielfalt seiner Darbietungen im Kreis europäischer Festspiele einnimmt, erfuhr abermals erfreuliche Bestätigung. Wiederkehr von Anton Bruckners Geburtstag und im Gedenken an die vor 100 Jahren stattgefundene Uraufführung der d-moll-Messe im Alten Dom zu Linz wird gegenwärtig in der oberösterreichischen Landeshauptstadt im Steinernen Saal des Landhauses eine sehenswerte Ausstellung unter dem Motto "Anton Bruckner und Linz" gezeigt. Wir bringen nachstehend einen knappen Auszug aus der Eröffnungsrede von Univ.-Prof. Hofrat Dr. Leopold Nowak, in dessen Händen die Durchführung dieser Schau und die Herausgabe des reichhaltigen Ausstellungskataloges lag. Anton Bruckners erste Zeit in Linz sind seine 10 Monate vom Oktober 1840 bis Juli 1841. Er wollte Lehrer werden und strebte diesem Ziel, wie wir wissen, mit vorbildlichem Eifer entgegen.
