En México y Jalisco las pérdidas en rendimiento de grano por plagas y enfermedades son considerables, especialmente las causadas por los tizones foliares y la pudrición del tallo. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar cuatro ciclos de selección individual (C0, C1, C2 y C3) de la población de sorgo (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) TP-17, para tizón foliar Exserohilum turcicum (Leo y Sug.) y altura de planta. La selección se hizo en plantas androestériles en condiciones de campo en Ocotlán, Jal., México, en el periodo de 1989 a 1991. En 1992 cada uno de los ciclos se cruzó con cinco líneas A “probadoras” (E13A, B140A, ATX623, R5A y ATX627), y en 1993 y 1994 se evaluaron los ciclos y sus cruzas (en 1994 también se incluyeron las líneas probadoras), bajo el diseño experimental bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. La selección individual fue efectiva para mejorar la resistencia a tizón foliar y reducir la altura de planta en la población TP17 per se en -0.223 unidades de calificación (escala de 1 a 5) y -10.4 cm por ciclo de selección, respectivamente. La mejor respuesta indirecta a la selección para tizón foliar se logró con la línea probadora susceptible ATX627 y para altura de planta con la línea probadora de mayor porte ATx623. La mejor aptitud combinatoria específica, tanto para tizón foliar como para altura de planta, se dio en la combinación del último ciclo de selección (C3) con la línea probadora ATX627.
