The aim of this research was to evaluate the risk factors for new and chronic subclinical intramammary infections (IMI) using the monthly somatic cells count of dairy cows. The study took place at 30 dairy herds with approximately 1,700 cows in lactation. Data characterizing the dairy farms and their milking management were obtained from a survey questionnaire. The somatic cells count values from 2 consecutive months were used to classify cows as either healthy or with new or chronic infections. A chi-squared test was used in the analysis of subclinical IMI to evaluate associations between each independent variable, followed by logistic regression to estimate the risk of a new infection in healthy cows and of chronic infection in cows with new infections. Factors increasing the odds ratio of a cow developing a new case of subclinical mastitis were (1) cows with more than 3 lactations, (2) cows with a mean hyperkeratosis score above 3, (3) cows with the udder below the hock, (4) cows with very dirty udders, and (5) milking of infected animals before healthy cows. Factors increasing the risk of a subclinical chronic infection compared with new cases of subclinical mastitis were (1) a lack of regular maintenance of milking machinery, (2) cows over 100 d in lactation, and (3) cows with the udder on or below the hock. The risk factors identified in this study can be used in IMI control programs to reduce the frequency of new and chronic cases of subclinical mastitis.
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of three common hemoparasites (Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina) in cattle from 16 counties in the Campos de Lages region, Santa Catarina state, Brazil, and the factors affecting disease occurrence. The study population consisted of 257 clinically healthy animals from 21 rural farms. Bovine blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture. DNA was extracted from whole blood by the phenol/ chloroform method. Genomic DNA extracted from blood samples was subjected to Multiplex PCR for screening of B. bovis, B. bigemina, and A. marginale using specific primers. Prevalences of A. marginale, B. bigemina, and B. bovis were 27%, 16%, and 29%, respectively. Mixed infection was observed in 17.5% of samples. The most frequent was Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in 6.62% of samples. A. marginale infection rates were statistically correlated with age groups of cattle. The infections detected in the study population were considered to be subclinical, based on the presence pathogen DNA and absence of clinical symptoms. Seasonality of the pathogens resulted in various degrees of infection, related to the age of the animals and the season. The Campos de Lages region is characterized by enzootic instability for these pathogens because of its climatic and geographic features.

RESUMO Com base em dois níveis de contagem de células somáticas (CCS) do leite utilizado como matéria-prima, determinou-se influência no rendimento e na eficiência de fabricação do queijo colonial, em escala industrial. Os dois níveis de CCS foram formados do leite captado pela indústria, baixa CCS (<500.000 células/mL) e alta CCS (≥500.000 células/mL), sendo produzidos sete lotes de queijo para cada nível. O rendimento foi avaliado com rendimento simples (litros de leite/kg de queijo produzido) e rendimento seco (litros de leite/kg de sólidos totais de queijo produzido). A eficiência de fabricação do queijo foi avaliada por meio das perdas de sólidos no soro de queijo. Mediante análises multivariadas, demonstrou-se a relação entre altas CCS e a diminuição no rendimento simples e seco de queijo colonial, que apresentou também menor eficiência de fabricação, sem alterar a composição do queijo. Além disso, determinaram-se dados relativos às características físico-químicas de queijo colonial, o qual ainda não possui um regulamento técnico de identidade e qualidade. Conclui-se que a qualidade do leite tem influência direta na produção dos queijos e que, ao utilizar matéria-prima com alta CCS, a indústria assume os prejuízos do menor rendimento e da menor eficiência de fabricação dos queijos coloniais.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of production factors on milking frequency and the latter’s effect on animal welfare in robotic milking. The experiment was performed with Holstein Friesian cows housed in free-stall barns. To assess the impact of production factors, body condition score, milk yield, and concentrate intake were determined. To determine the effects of the milking frequency on welfare, the locomotion and teat-end scores and serum cortisol level were evaluated. Three experimental groups were formed according to the daily average milking frequency: 1.0 to 1.9, 2.1 to 2.9, and above 3.0 milkings per day. The decrease in milking frequency during lactation was related to the reduction in concentrate intake and milk yield. The increase in milking frequency was related to the reduction in the milk flow and the increase in milking duration. Milking frequency was affected by concentrate intake, locomotion problems, milk yield, and lactation stage. The cortisol level and teat-end conditions were not affected by milking frequency. Milking frequency impacts milk flow, duration of milking, and milk composition; however, there is no effect on the indicators of animal welfare.
Vaginal hysterectomy (VH) is the definitive surgical management for uterine prolapse. It is also the preferred route for other pelvic pathology where a hysterectomy is warranted, as it is associated with lower complication rate and faster recovery time. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of transvaginal ultrasound scan (TVS) as an investigation prior to vaginal hysterectomy. A total of 103 patients were reviewed over 1 year. Associated gynaecological pathology was found in 46.6% of patients on TVS and this led to a change in planned management in 2.9% of cases. Consequently, preoperative TVS would appear to be a worthwhile investigation.
RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar e comparar o perfil metabólico de vacas Holandês (H) e mestiças Holandês x Jersey (HxJ) no periparto. Avaliaram-se 24 vacas, sendo 11 vacas Holandês e 13 mestiças Holandês x Jersey. Semanalmente, coletou-se sangue para a determinação das concentrações séricas de glicose, beta-hidroxibutirato (BHB), proteína total, albumina, aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatinoquinase (CK), cálcio total, cálcio iônico, magnésio, fósforo inorgânico e colesterol. Avaliou-se também o peso vivo e o escore de condição corporal (ECC). Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância com medidas repetidas no tempo. As vacas Holandês apresentaram maior peso vivo. Não houve diferença entre os grupamentos genéticos para ECC. Foi observada tendência de maiores concentrações séricas de BHB, AST e maior concentração de cálcio iônico em vacas mestiças Holandês x Jersey. Vacas mestiças Holandês x Jersey e Holandês apresentaram perfil energético similar durante o período de transição pré e pós-parto na maioria dos indicadores, com exceção do cálcio, que foi maior nas vacas mestiças, e do fósforo, que foi superior nas vacas Holandês.
This study was carried out with the aim of estimating the degree of gastrointestinal helminth infection in goats on the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina. Twelve young females and 11 adult females were used. Every 28 days, feces samples were taken to quantify the nematode eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Larval culturing was performed on a pool of positive samples from the same group. The fecal egg counts (FECs) ranged from zero to 10,400 EPG in the young group and zero to 7,600 EPG in the adult group. The mean FECs were between 583.3 and 4441.7 in the young group and between 418.2 and 2181.8 in the adult group. Eggs of the order Strongylida and genera Moniezia and Toxocara, and oocysts of Coccidia, were observed. The young animals were more affected and Haemonchus was the most prevalent genus in the samples.
