En la presente investigación se aborda el análisis de los artefactos arqueológicos líticos recuperados en el municipio de Santa María de Nueva Segovia, localizado en la zona noroeste del territorio nicaragüense, fronterizo con la república de Honduras. Se parte, para ello, del hecho que esos artefactos son la evidencia que mayor resistencia presenta ante las inclemencias del tiempo, por tanto, su presencia en los contextos arqueológicos aportará importante información sobre su origen, uso y desarrollo de la tecnología desarrollada por la sociedad que los produjo. Cada artefacto es el resultado de diversos procesos de producción. Para aproximarnos al conocimiento del esfuerzo que ello implicó, se analizó la materia prima, las técnicas de talla aplicadas y las posibles huellas de uso mediante observación macroscópica y apoyo de lupas. Con todo esto se podría inferir el desarrollo tecnológico y económico de la sociedad que los produjo. Es importante señalar que el presente estudio, deriva del proyecto titulado “Reconocimiento y Documentación de Sitios Arqueológicos del municipio de Santa María, Nueva Segovia”, en el cual se documentaron ocho sitios arqueológicos, de los cuales proviene la muestra lítica analizada. El proyecto se realizó en el primer semestre del 2021, bajo la dirección del Centro Arqueológico de Documentación e Investigación CADI de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias Jurídicas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua, UNAN, Managua con el apoyo fi nanciero y logístico de la Alcaldía del Poder Ciudadano del municipio de Santa María de Nueva Segovia y la colaboración del Instituto Nicaragüense de Cultura INC.
Esta investigación se enfoca en la interpretación desarrollada sobre datos obtenidos a través de prospecciones y excavaciones arqueológicas en el sitio Sombrero Negro, localizado en la comunidad de La Batea, municipio de Muelle de los Bueyes en la Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Sur (RACCS) de Nicaragua. Este lugar es caracterizado por la alta presencia de materiales del período prehispánico como rocas estilizadas, piedras grabadas (petroglifos), concentraciones de materiales líticos y fragmentos cerámicos en superficie y un área sepulcral. Muchas de las rocas reflejan figuras de animales (cocodrilos, aves), que han sido aprovechadas por sus formas originales para su estilización. Los grabados en piedra muestran representaciones antropomorfas, zoomorfas, fitomorfas, geométricas y abstractas. En tres fosas excavadas se identificaron elementos de cómo éstas fueron elaboradas, además de artefactos cerámicos y líticos que fueron depositados de forma ordenada al interior de las mismas. Como resultado del estudio se determina que Sombrero Negro fue un espacio donde se desarrollaron prácticas ceremoniales (rituales, adoración, etc.); por tanto, fue un lugar significativo para la sociedad que lo produjo. De acuerdo con el análisis comparativo de la tecnología cerámica, el sitio fue ocupado entre el 400 a.C. y 440 d.C., cronología relativa reforzada en planteamientos teóricos y metodológicos propios de la arqueología y la etnografía.
Se presentan en esta comunicación, resultados de investigación obtenidos del análisis comparativo entre dos contextos funerarios prehispánicos de periodos muy tempranos (500aC-500dC), ambos del municipio de Muelle de los Bueyes en la Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Sur (RACCS) de Nicaragua. Los resultados de estudio arqueológicos en Muelle de Los Bueyes han generado nuevas interpretaciones asociadas a prácticas socio-culturales de épocas tempranas, dándole cumplimiento al objetivo propuesto que expresaba identificar aquellos elementos simbólicos que reflejaban diferencias de clases o jerarquía social, en base en la distribución y tipo de materialidad recuperada en los contextos estudiados.
El presente documento refiere una síntesis de seis años de estudios arqueológicos desarrollados en la comarca Nejapa, municipio de Managua, Nicaragua. La sistematicidad de los estudios permitió comprender cómo se estructuró los espacios y el sistema constructivo de las casas que conforman los restos de un pequeño poblado prehispánico que se asentó a orillas de la Laguna de Nejapa, el que culturalmente se vincula con grupos Chorotegas. Entre otras cosas, se obtuvo nuevos y sustanciales datos para comprender de mejor manera la forma de vida desarrollada por los habitantes que ocuparon este espacio en épocas anteriores a la llegada de los colonizadores europeos al actual territorio nacional. En el poblado prehispánico de Nejapa se han logrado identificar trece posibles casas, alrededor de una pequeña plaza central, construidas a base de piedras y tierra. Se han intervenido, mediante excavaciones arqueológicas en extensión, únicamente dos de esas estructuras, lo que ha permitido conocer cómo las construyeron y corroborar algunos datos que se encuentran plasmados en documentos históricos de viajeros y cronistas al momento de la conquista de nuestra América.
