La littérature politique américaine sous-tend fortement nombre d’écrits politiques brésiliens de l’époque de la Régence. Le modèle nord-américain de construction de l’État fut considéré au moins aussi sérieusement que les modèles anglais ou français. Il s’agit ici de montrer que le regard porté sur les États-Unis a contribué à forger la définition qu’un homme d’État comme Feijó s’est donnée du Brésil. Fédéralisme, république, centralisation, décentralisation, monarchie, etc., ces thèmes étaient pensés, représentés, comparés, combinés, opposés et réduits au regard de l’expérience américaine, pour correspondre à ce que les partisans de tel ou tel courant attendaient du Brésil.
