Abstract:In this work we present the results of research which intended to identify the principal obstacles for the learning of the model of evolution by natural selection in students belonging to two courses in secondary school. The existence of obstacles is deduced from the identification and characterization of the explicative patterns and the conceptions that the students express when they explain cases of adaptive evolution. This is supported by the analysis coming from the history and epistemology of biology and from cognitive psychology. It identifies common-sense teleology, linear causal reasoning and individual based reasoning as three main obstacles and some of the instructional consequences of those results are discussed.
Pollen mother cells obtained from regenerated plants of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.), in a population composed exclusively of male plants, through the process of anther culture from the hybrid G27 X 22-8, were analyzed during meiosis. It was observed that, during theprocess of anther culture by organogenesis, the pollen mother cells of the regenerants had great genomic instability, as evidenced by disturbances in all the meiotic phases of the first and second division. Furthermore, structural chromosomal abnormalities, in addition to aneuploidy and polyploidy, were observed.
AbstractBetween the decades of 1930 and 1940, the agreement, which originated the so called evolutionary synthesis, was generated. This agreement had a very rich theoretical body, and at the same time, it was proposed as a research program for the study of the biological evolution. However, during the last four decades, some aspects of this theoretical body were questioned at the same time that other areas of research were incorporated, which gave rise to long, complicated debates of different nature. Advanced mathematical models are now used to simulate reciprocating compressors and particularly the cylinder valves. The valves represent the most critical component of these machines and need particular attention from the technology point of view. In addition, the potential variable operating conditions must be properly addressed and investigated. The pulsations generated by the compressor and piping system can have a critical impact on valve behavior. Therefore for complex situations a simulation of the complete system including pressure vessels and piping can be performed. The results of the programs include displacement, pressure drop, compression cycle, and pressure pulsations based on coefficients obtained experimentally and through advanced CFD models. Through simulation an optimum compromise between mechanical valve behavior and minimum energy consumption can be found.
