A Educação Tutorial teve suas origens relacionadas ao aprendizado de funções industriais na década de 1970 e foi introduzida na formação médica ao final da década de 1990. Inicialmente, sua inserção nas escolas médicas era incipiente e não constituia parte do do currículo formal ou das diretrizes institucionais. Esses fatos propiciaram diversas adaptações e o seu distanciamento dos objetivos originais, sendo considerada muitas vezes como iniciação científica ou atividade de apoio emocional ao estudante. Esse artigo discute os problemas relacionados a sua identidade e estabelecimento no ambiente de ensino médico e propõe uma definição relacionada a suas raízes. Foram ressaltadas ainda as dificuldades de avaliação da eficácia do processo e de formação de tutores, que se associa em parte à falta de referências que determinem as habilidades esperadas nesta função. Também são discutidas as necessidades e potencialidades da Educação Tutorial focada na área médica
Modelo de Estudo: Relato de experiência. Importância do problema: O acesso ao ensino superior no Brasil tem sido ampliado por uma série de programas e ações do Estado. Entretanto, ações voltadas à educação nos níveis básicos não evoluiram da mesma forma, deixando lacunas na formação dos jovens. Nesse contexto, muitos cursos pré-vestibulares populares ou comunitários foram criados, na tentativa de suprir a essas necessidades da população que não tem condições financeiras para pagar um cursinho privado. O Programa de Educação Tutorial da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo (PET-FMRP-USP) gere, desde 2008, o Cursinho Popular do PET-Medicina (CPM), que somou ao longo desses sete anos mais de 500 alunos matriculados, com 183 aprovações em vestibulares, tanto em universidades públicas como nas particulares com bolsas de estudo. Comentários: Dentro do tripé ensino-pesquisa-extensão da universidade, o CPM representa um programa de extensão com benefícios a todos os envolvidos, incluindo professores e gestores, que têm a oportunidade de incrementar suas habilidades de relacionamentos interpessoais e praticar atos de cidadania
