The method used to grow crystals of chrome alum weighing over twelve pounds is described. Various attempts to preserve these crystals are also mentioned. The use of crystal growing as a project for high-school chemistry pupils is suggested.
Since the previously investigated bis(tetrahydroisoquinolines) 1 and bis(benzylamines) 2 may be classified as 1,omega-diaryl-1,omega-alkanediamines, it appeared worthwhile to examine this structural concept as a guideline for predicting significant fibrinolytic activity. The prototype bis compounds 7, 14, 15, and 29-31, which were synthesized for this purpose, incorporate such molecular modifications as replacement of the tetrahydroisoquinoline nuclei of series 1 with tetrahydrobenzazepine (7) and tetrahydropyridoindole (14-15) nuclei. The latter compounds, as well as 29-31 which possess features common to both series 1 and 2, showed good to moderate activity in the standard rat (ip) screen. Significant departures from the 1,omega-diaryl-1,omega-alkanediamine structural concept led to compounds (35 and 40) of weak to moderate activity.
elusion of a + term excludes II as an important species in the rate-determining step unless the transition state is "late and essentially resembles IV.
THE first meeting of the spring term of the Chemistry Club of the George Washington High School, the members, old and new, were asked to submit plans for their individual and group projects. One group of five pupils selected "Developing and Printing Pictures" as its project. The writer was asked by these pupils to act as their faculty advisor. When the group met to discuss the project, six additional pupils who were also interested presented themselves. This show of interest in photography led to the suggestion that they apply to the General Organization for permission to organize as a Camera Club. Permission was granted. The story of the organization of the club in the school newspaper brought more applications for membership. The club held its first meeting with about twenty members present. The usual organization was effected immediately. Officers were elected and a simple constitution, modeled after those of other school clubs, was adopted. A committee was appointed to for-

Die Kondensation der β‐Phenyläthylamine (I) mit den Dicarbonsäuren (II) liefert die Bis‐amide (III), die durch Phosphoroxychlorid zu den Bis‐dihydroisochinolinen (IV) cyclisiert werden.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
