These two reproducible patterns of repair can now be used to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms controlling the extent and progression of connective tissue differentiation in indirect bone repair without the additional variable of a nonstandardized mechanical environment.
Distraction produces an environment in the distraction gap that suppresses the formation of cartilage. The formation of cartilage by injured periosteum, however, is obligatory and does not appear to be influenced by distraction. Bone formation within the distraction gap occurs where angiogenesis develops.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
