The significance of tourism in the development of regions has become of interest to academics in recent decades and its contribution is evident. The rapid tourism development is creating pressure on the destination’s competitiveness, as well as on its sustainable development. The Tatra Euroregion has been connecting two nationalities for decades via joint activities that develop the region by strengthening tourism. However, little attention is given to developing the Euroregion by way of tourism. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify whether the development of tourism in this Euroregion will be sustainable in the future, which can be fulfilled by answering two research questions, RQ1: What is the current state of tourism development in the Tatra Euroregion? and RQ2: Is the further development of tourism in the Tatra Euroregion subject to the principle of sustainability? We will answer the questions by analysing statistical data and documents that describe the cooperation activities within the Euroregion. The paper contributes to the analysis of cross-border cooperation within the Euroregion, as well as to research in the field of regional development with sustainable tourism, which is determined by the life cycle of the destination.
Destinations are traditionally created based on the administrative division of the territory. However, fragmented territorial structures can represent an obstacle to the implementation of effective development processes within destination management organizations. The activities of third-generation destination management organisations go beyond territorial divisions and instead focus on tourism flows and functional service chains in destinations. Even though the need to remove the administrative division of destinations is apparent and third-generation management organizations are being created, research in this area is not extensive. The aim of the study is therefore to present a methodology that leads to the efficiency of the activities of destination management organisations based on the monitoring of tourism flows and ecosytem of services in selected destinations in Slovakia (Dolný Zemplín and Horný Zemplín). Through a quantitative survey of visitors and tourism stakeholders in selected destinations, the authors found that the interested parties perceive the monitored destinations as a whole - not divided and the activity of existing destination management organisations as insufficient. The study provides recommendations for the implementation of efficient development processes within destination management organisations by connecting them based on the monitoring of tourism flows. The presented methodology can serve as a starting point for the restructuring of destination management organisations for other destinations in Slovakia and abroad.
Incorporating smart tourism into development priorities is the key aspect for tourism destinations and therefore, it should be approached accordingly. In theory, smart tourism development is considered as a factor in achieving sustainable competitiveness of tourism destinations. The application of smart destination shifts the destination development; however, the progress is under-researched so far. The efficient destination management requires tools for measuring smart tourism development. For that reason, the aim of this paper is to apply the methodological framework for measuring smart tourism development in a selected Slovak destination (the Banská Bystrica region). We have applied the methodology based on the Valencian Network of Smart Destination Indicators. The methodology was adapted to the availability of the input data at a regional level in Slovakia and tested in the Banská Bystrica region (NUTS 3). The obtained findings reveal that the Banská Bystrica region is aware of the need to implement smart solutions to improve the quality of life in the region for its residents, as well as visitors. The paper provides recommendation on what data needs to be collected and how these data can be obtained at a regional level in order to assess smart tourism development. The research conducted has further applicability in different destinations and on different levels. However, it is limited by the availability of the input data, which can determine the applicability of the indicators in Slovakia.
