The recognition of nonverbal emotional signals and the integration of multimodal emotional information are essential for successful social communication among humans of any age. Whereas prior studies of age dependency in the recognition of emotion often focused on either the prosodic or the facial aspect of nonverbal signals, our purpose was to create a more naturalistic setting by presenting dynamic stimuli under three experimental conditions: auditory, visual, and audiovisual. Eighty-four healthy participants (women = 44, men = 40; age range 20-70 years) were tested for their abilities to recognize emotions either mono- or bimodally on the basis of emotional (happy, alluring, angry, disgusted) and neutral nonverbal stimuli from voice and face. Additionally, we assessed visual and auditory acuity, working memory, verbal intelligence, and emotional intelligence to explore potential explanatory effects of these population parameters on the relationship between age and emotion recognition. Applying unbiased hit rates as performance measure, we analyzed data with linear regression analyses, t tests, and with mediation analyses. We found a linear, age-related decrease in emotion recognition independent of stimulus modality and emotional category. In contrast, the improvement in recognition rates associated with audiovisual integration of bimodal stimuli seems to be maintained over the life span. The reduction in emotion recognition ability at an older age could not be sufficiently explained by age-related decreases in hearing, vision, working memory, and verbal intelligence. These findings suggest alterations in social perception at a level of complexity beyond basic perceptional and cognitive abilities.

Results from studies on gender differences in emotion recognition vary, depending on the types of emotion and the sensory modalities used for stimulus presentation. This makes comparability between different studies problematic. This study investigated emotion recognition of healthy participants (N = 84; 40 males; ages 20 to 70 years), using dynamic stimuli, displayed by two genders in three different sensory modalities (auditory, visual, audio-visual) and five emotional categories. The participants were asked to categorise the stimuli on the basis of their nonverbal emotional content (happy, alluring, neutral, angry, and disgusted). Hit rates and category selection biases were analysed. Women were found to be more accurate in recognition of emotional prosody. This effect was partially mediated by hearing loss for the frequency of 8,000 Hz. Moreover, there was a gender-specific selection bias for alluring stimuli: Men, as compared to women, chose "alluring" more often when a stimulus was presented by a woman as compared to a man.

No pharmacological treatment is available to date that shows satisfactory effects on cognitive symptoms in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-Is) improve neurotransmitter signaling by interfering in intracellular second messenger cascades. By preventing the breakdown of cAMP and/or cGMP, central neurotransmitter activity is maintained. Different PDE families exist with distinct characteristics among which substrate specificity and regional distribution. Preclinical data is promising especially with regard to inhibition of PDE2, PDE4, PDE5 and PDE10. In addition, cognitive improvement has been reported in both elderly and/or non-impaired young human subjects after PDE1 or PDE4 inhibition. Moreover, some of these studies show effects on cognitive domains relevant to schizophrenia, in particular memory. The current review incorporates an overview of the distinct molecular characteristics of the different PDE families and their relationship to the neurobiological mechanisms related to cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. So far, procognitive effects of only three types of PDE-Is have been assessed in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia inhibiting PDE3, PDE5 and PDE10. However, the limited data available do not allow to draw firm conclusions on the value of PDE-Is as cognitive enhancers in schizophrenia yet. The field is still in its infancy, but nevertheless different PDE-Is seem promising as candidate to optimise neural communication in the prefrontal cortex favouring cognitive functioning in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, in particular dual inhibitors including PDE1-Is, PDE3-Is and PDE10A-Is.
