This article investigates the distributional and information structural (IS) properties of il y a ‘there is’ clefts in comparison with c’est ‘it is’ clefts in French. Il y a clefts, which are prototypically said to be “presentational” or express all-focus, are relatively under-researched with respect to c’est clefts. We present the results of an extensive corpus study of il y a clefts in three different registers, revealing that these clefts most often express an all-focus articulation, but also quite often express a focus-background articulation, which has not been acknowledged often in the linguistic literature. Moreover, the corpora contain contrastive il y a clefts (displaying properties of both all-focus and topic-comment sentences), which to our knowledge have not been noticed before. It follows from these data that although c’est and il y a clefts can both express all-focus and focus-background, they clearly differ with respect to the topic-comment articulation and have specialized for different functions. Finally, several syntactic and pragmatic factors are presented that may account for the (distributive) differences between the two cleft types, e.g., the impossibility of non-(pro)nominal clefted elements in il y a clefts, genre differences, and the implication of exhaustivity.
This article presents the results of a corpus analysis of the information structure properties of il y a clefts (e.g. Il y a Claude qui chante ‘There is Claude who is singing’ / ‘Claude is singing’). I will show that il y a clefts and existential sentences introduced by il y a can express the same three information structure articulations. Furthermore, it will be argued that il y a clefts and existential sentences function as focus markers, and that this hypothesis is further supported by psycholinguistic findings concerning constructions related to il y a.
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Lena.Karssenberg@ kuleuven.be, Karen. Karssenberg@kuleuven.be Résumé. This paper addresses two main questions concerning French il n'y a que 'there is only' clefts such as Il n'y a que Superman qui porte le slip par-dessus le pantalon (lit. There's only Superman who wears the underwear over the pants, 'Only Superman wears his underwear over his pants ', cf. Jeanjean 1979;Pierrard 1985;Léard 1992;Furukawa 1996): (i) What is their distribution across two different registers of French? (ii) What are their information structural properties? The findings of a systematic corpus analysis lead us to conclude, firstly, that this type of cleft is much more frequent in informal written than in formal written French. Secondly, the corpus is shown to contain three types of information structural articulations, of which only the first has been mentioned in the literature on the il n'y a que construction: (i) in focus-background clefts, the clefted element (Superman) is focal, while the relative clause constitutes the background. (ii) In double focus clefts, (part of) the clefted element and (part of) the relative clause are focal. Finally (iii), the clefted element can also function as a spatio-temporal topic that serves as a frame for the information expressed by the relative clause. Furthermore, several clefts are shown to be ambiguous with respect to their information structure,...
