A critical response to the present stage in the development of management education is presented. The concept of competence is evaluated and its utility assessed. In particular, the use of the term by the Management Charter Initiative (MCI) is thrown into critical focus and found to be pragmatically and conceptually flawed. Emphasizes the importance of addressing the approach actually adopted by the MCI and other agencies in the “reform” of vocational qualifications and argues that the MCI has been incorrectly criticized for attempting to impose a simplistic model of management. Considers the implications and argues that management educators and developers are faced with a dominant concept of “competence” which they find difficult to realize in their educational practice. Subjects the concept of competence to conceptual analysis in order to bring into focus the key analytical elements implicit in the term, assesses the MCI approach and offers alternative approaches which place the emphasis on those issues which are critical for achieving consensually desired enhancements in management education and development.
Despite debate and criticism, the notion of “competence” has risen to prominence very rapidly and now has an important place in the vocabulary of human resource management (HRM). Seeks to explain such a rapid rise by drawing on discourse theory. The discourse of competence may be seen to arise through the convergence of discourses in four separate domains, and thereby gain legitimacy from the stocks of already formulated meanings in these separate domains. Taking a discourse theory approach also exposes the control aspects of competence through the constitution of the individual as a social subject in terms of the inscription of assessment judgements. However, the convergence of discourses has not resulted in complete closure. Concludes with some speculation about the degree to which the competence approach will successfully achieve employer commitment.
Over recent years, there has been a growth in the development of organizational initiatives by local community groups, particularly those espousing radical values and goals. However, often these groups must obtain funding from more powerful sponsors, usually national or local government agencies. In order to obtain such funding, the community organizations must disguise their founding values and goals which are contradictory to the understanding upon which public policy is based. The resulting tension between public and covert goals leads to turnover of personnel subscribing to founding values, and thus to transformation of the organization away from radical intent. This paper analyzes this process in the case of two major radical organizational experiments.
Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema carpocapsae are microscopic entomoparasitic nematodes (EPNs) that are attractive, organic alternatives for controlling a wide range of crop insect pests. EPNs evolved with parasitic adaptations that enable them to "feast" upon insect hosts. The infective juvenile, a non-feeding, developmentally arrested nematode stage, is destined to seek out insect hosts and initiates parasitism. After an insect host is located, EPNs enter the insect body through natural openings or by cuticle penetration. Upon access to the insect hemolymph, bacterial symbionts (Photorhabdus luminescens for H. bacteriophora and Xenorhabdus nematophila for S. carpocapsae) are regurgitated from the nematode gut and rapidly proliferate. During population growth, bacterial symbionts secrete numerous toxins and degradative enzymes that exterminate and bioconvert the host insect. During development and reproduction, EPNs obtain their nutrition by feeding upon both the bioconverted host and proliferated symbiont. Throughout the EPN life cycle, similar characteristics are seen. In general, EPNs are analogous to each other by the fact that their life cycle consists of five stages of development. Furthermore, reproduction is much more complex and varies between genera and species. In other words, infective juveniles of S. carpocapsae are destined to become males and females, whereas H. bacteriophora develop into hermaphrodites that produce subsequent generations of males and females. Other differences include insect host range, population growth rates, specificity of bacterial phase variants, etc. This review attempts to compare EPNs, their bacterial counterparts and symbiotic relationships for further enhancement of mass producing EPNs in liquid media.
