A constellation of technologies has been researched with an eye toward enabling a hydrogen economy. Within the research fields of hydrogen production, storage, and utilization in fuel cells, various classes of materials have been developed that target higher efficiencies and utility. This Review examines recent progress in these research fields from the years 2011–2021, exploring the most commonly occurring concepts and the materials directions important to each field. Particular attention has been given to catalyst materials that enable the green production of hydrogen from water, chemical and physical storage systems, and materials used in technical capacities within fuel cells. The quantification of publication and materials trends provides a picture of the current state of development within each node of the hydrogen economy.

Technological and medical advances over the past few decades epitomize human capabilities. However, the increased life expectancies and concomitant land-use changes have significantly contributed to the release of ∼830 gigatons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the last three decades, an amount comparable to the prior two and a half centuries of CO2 emissions. The United Nations has adopted a pledge to achieve “net zero”, i.e., yearly removing as much CO2 from the atmosphere as the amount emitted due to human activities, by the year 2050. Attaining this goal will require a concerted effort by scientists, policy makers, and industries all around the globe. The development of novel materials on industrial scales to selectively remove CO2 from mixtures of gases makes it possible to mitigate CO2 emissions using a multipronged approach. Broadly, the CO2 present in the atmosphere can be captured using materials and processes for biological, chemical, and geological technologies that can sequester CO2 while also reducing our dependence on fossil-fuel reserves. In this review, we used the curated literature available in the CAS Content Collection to present a systematic analysis of the various approaches taken by scientists and industrialists to restore carbon balance in the environment. Our analysis highlights the latest trends alongside the associated challenges.

The ability of modern agriculture to meet future food demand imposed by accelerating growth of the world’s population is a major challenge, and fertilizers play a key role by replacing nutrients in agricultural soil. Given the need for fertilizers, their cost in nonrenewable resources and energy, and the consequences of the greenhouse gas emissions required to make them, people have begun to explore ways to make fertilizer manufacturing and use more sustainable. Using data from the CAS Content Collection, this review examines and analyzes the academic and patent literature on sustainable fertilizers from 2001 to 2021. The breakdown of journal and patent literature publication over time on this topic, country or region of publications, the substances included in published research, among other things allow us to understand the general progress in the field as well as the classes of materials and concepts driving innovation. We hope that this bibliometric analysis and literary review will assist researchers in relevant industries to discover and implement ways to supplement conventional fertilizers and nutrient sources while improving the efficiency and sustainability of waste management and ammonia production.

Many marine derived fatty acids, mainly from sponges, possess vinylic halogenated moieties (bromine or iodine) but their assessment as antileishmanial candidates remains elusive. In this work, we undertook the first total synthesis of a novel series of 2-allyl-3-halo-2-nonadecenoic acids, which preferentially inhibit the Leishmania DNA topoisomerase IB enzyme (LTopIB) over the human topoisomerase IB enzyme (hTopIB). The synthesis of 2-allyl-3-bromo-2E-nonadecenoic acid (1a) and 2-allyl-3-chloro-2E-nonadecenoic acid (2a) was achieved through a palladium catalyzed haloallylation of 2-nonadecynoic acid (2-NDA) using either allyl bromide or allyl chloride in the presence of PdCl2(PhCN)2 in 57–83 % overall yields. Among the new halogenated synthetic compounds, 1a was the most inhibitory of LTopIB with an EC50 = 7 μM, while the shorter chain analogs 2-allyl-3-bromo-2E-dodecenoic acid (1b) and 2-allyl-3-chloro-2E-dodecenoic acid (2b), synthesized from 2-dodecynoic acid, were not inhibitory of LTopIB (EC50 > 100 μM) resulting in the overall order of inhibition 1a > 2-NDA > 2a > > 1b ≅ 2b. The acids 1a and 2a inhibit LTopIB by a Gimatecan-independent mechanism. The enhanced LTopIB inhibition of 1a was computationally rationalized in terms of a halogen bond between the bromine in 1a and a DNA phosphate (binding energy = − 4.85 kcal/mol). Acid 1a also displayed preferential cytotoxicity towards Leishmania infantum amastigotes (EC50 = 2.5 μM) over L. infantum promastigotes (EC50 > 25 μM).

Aza-peptide aldehydes and ketones are a new class of reversible protease inhibitors that are specific for the proteasome and clan CD cysteine proteases. We designed and synthesised aza-Leu derivatives that were specific for the chymotrypsin-like active site of the proteasome, aza-Asp derivatives that were effective inhibitors of caspases-3 and-6, and aza-Asn derivatives that inhibited S. mansoni and I. ricinus legumains. The crystal structure of caspase-3 in complex with our caspase-specific aza-peptide methyl ketone inhibitor with an aza-Asp residue at P1 revealed a covalent linkage between the inhibitor carbonyl carbon and the active site cysteinyl sulphur. Aza-peptide aldehydes and ketones showed no cross-reactivity towards cathepsin B or chymotrypsin. The initial in vitro selectivity of these inhibitors makes them suitable candidates for further development into therapeutic agents to potentially treat multiple myeloma, neurodegenerative diseases, and parasitic infections.
