This article presents the strategies and actions adopted by the Brazilian Ministry of Health to hold back COVID-19. The response to the disease was immediate and occurred prior to the first case being detected in Brazil. Provision of information and communication to the population and the press was adopted as a fundamental strategy for addressing the epidemic. Guidance provided to the population has been clear, stressing the importance of coronavirus transmission prevention measures. Efforts have been directed towards strengthening health surveillance and health care, as well as boosting research, development and innovation. Actions have targeted human resource training and expanding coverage afforded by the Brazilian National Health System (SUS). Protecting health workers is a priority. All SUS health workers, managers and directors are dedicated to preserving the health and life of each and every Brazilian citizen.

RESUMO: O isolamento social imposto pela pandemia da COVID-19 traz à tona, de forma potencializada, alguns indicadores preocupantes sobre a violência doméstica e a violência familiar contra a mulher. As organizações voltadas ao enfrentamento da violência doméstica já observaram aumento da violência doméstica por causa da coexistência forçada, do estresse econômico e de temores sobre o coronavírus. O artigo busca estabelecer algumas relações entre o isolamento social durante a pandemia da COVID-19 e o aumento da violência contra as mulheres, levando em conta o contexto de uma sociedade patriarcal. Foram analisados dados, ainda incipientes, publicados pela imprensa de diversos países, bem como relatórios de organizações internacionais e organizações direcionadas ao enfrentamento da violência doméstica. The subject of "health services waste" is controversial and widely discussed. Biosafety, the principles of which include safeguarding occupational health, community health, and environmental safety, is directly involved in the issue of medical waste management. There are controversies as to the risks posed by medical waste, as evidenced by diverging opinions among authors: some advocate severe approaches on the basis that medical waste is hazardous, while others contend that the potential for infection from medical waste is nonexistent. The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) has published resolution RDC 33/2003 to standardize medical waste management nationwide. There is an evident need to implement biosafety procedures in this area, including heath care workers' training and provision of information to the general population.

Abstractobjective To analyse the ecological association between the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the Brazilian municipalities and average leprosy incidence rate in the period 2009-2011.methods An ecological study taking the Brazilian municipalities as its units of analysis. The local empirical Bayes estimation method was used to obtain smoothed incidence rates (SIR) for leprosy. The mean, median, first quartile (Q1) and third quartile (Q3) of the SIR were calculated per 100 000 inhabitants. Hierarchical log-linear negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the incidence rate ratios (IRR).

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar fatores associados ao atendimento por violência doméstica e familiar entre vítimas atendidas em serviços de urgência e emergência no Brasil. Realizou-se estudo de casos e controles baseado no Sistema de Vigilância de Violências e Acidentes (VIVA), 2011. Foram selecionadas mulheres com 18 anos ou mais de idade, vítimas de violência doméstica e familiar (casos) em comparação com aquelas vítimas de acidentes (controles). As razões de chances ajustadas foram estimadas por regressão logística não condicional. Foram incluídos 623 casos e 10.120 controles. Na análise ajustada, foram fatores de risco: idade mais jovem (18-29 anos), baixa escolaridade, não exercer atividade remunerada, consumo de bebida alcoólica, procura de atendimento em outro serviço, ocorrência em final de semana e durante a noite ou madrugada. A violência doméstica e familiar teve o consumo de bebida alcoólica como fator fortemente associado. Os dias e horas de maior ocorrência evidenciam a necessidade de adequação dos serviços de atendimento às vítimas.
