Introducción: Las enfermedades crónicas como la obesidad, diabetes, cáncer, ECV, desnutrición y dislipidemia denotan ser un problema importante a nivel mundial debido a diferentes factores que puedan presentarse, esto conlleva a un deterioro en el estado de salud, altas tazas de morbilidad y mortalidad. Es por ello que se ha tomado en cuenta la suplementación de la spirulina en aquellos pacientes que puedan presentar ciertos desbalances tanto en valores bioquímicos, macro y micronutrientes. Objetivo: Presentar los efectos de la Spirulina como alimento funcional y su actividad terapéutica en enfermedades crónicas mejorando su calidad de vida. Material y Métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de fuentes confiables con el objetivo de valorar los efectos de la spirulina como alimento funcional y su actividad terapéutica en enfermedades crónicas. Para ello en el estudio se realizó la revisión del contenido de 21 artículos recopilados de las bases de datos: Scopus, PubMed, MediMay, Hindawi, Scielo, Redalyc, Elsevier, Springer, Medigrapic y Sciencedirect. La información recopilada fue de ayuda para establecer los aportes y beneficios de espirulina según el tipo de paciente y la enfermedad que presenten. Resultados: El consumo de spirulina presenta beneficios en la salud de personas que padecen enfermedades crónicas al regular niveles de glucosa, colesterol y triglicéridos por su contenido de aminoácidos, ácidos grasos esenciales, vitaminas C y E, entre otros; además de un consecuente control de peso. Conclusión: A pesar de que no todas las enfermedades crónicas presentan las mismas complicaciones en la salud, el consumo de spirulina abarca mejoras y beneficios para cada caso.
