A superhydrophobic and superoleophilic oil sorbent was prepared by attaching SiO2 particles onto a cotton fiber surface by a sol–gel method and subsequent octadecyltrichlorosilane modification.
A new kind of hydrophobic and oil sorbent based on jute fiber was successfully prepared by the integration of silica onto a fiber surface via the sol-gel method and subsequent hydrophobic modification with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). Compared with the hydrophilic raw fiber, the modified fiber had a water contact angle (CA) of 136.2°, suggesting that the material has good hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the ability of oil in the oil/water system (taking diesel for example) to absorb was revealed by the kinetics, the isotherm equation, and the thermodynamic parameters. Adsorption behavior was kinetically investigated using pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order models. The data mostly correlated with the pseudo first-order model. The equilibrium adsorption at 298 K was assessed by using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Freundlich model had greater consistency with the experimental data. The obtained thermodynamic parameters demonstrate that the adsorption of diesel is spontaneous, favorable, and exothermic.
Coffee cherry husks, the main byproduct of coffee production, contain an abundance of polyphenols. In this study, dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mice were used to study the protective effects of polyphenolic extracts of coffee cherry husks (CCHP) on inflammation. The results indicated that CCHP administration alleviated the histological changes of DSS-induced colitis in mice and downregulated the mRNA level of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and Cox-2. Interestingly, CCHP inhibited the activation of microglia and suppressed neural inflammation in the brain. The TLR4/Myd88/NF-κB signaling pathway was examined and found to be inhibited by CCHP. Furthermore, a determination of the gut microbiota showed that an alteration of microbiota induced by DSS was restored by CCHP, including the decrease of the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and the increase of Bacteroidota. In conclusion, our results revealed the great potential of CCHP to alleviate brain inflammation in colitis mice by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and regulating gut microbiota.
The emergence and spread of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is of global concern. To improve the understanding of drug resistance in Mycobacteria, numerous studies have been performed to discover diagnostic markers and genetic determinants associated with resistance to anti-tuberculosis drug. However, the related information is scattered in a massive body of literature, which is inconvenient for researchers to investigate the molecular mechanism of drug resistance. Therefore, we manually collected 1707 curated associations between 73 compounds and 132 molecules (including coding genes and non-coding RNAs) in 6 mycobacterial species from 465 studies. The experimental details of molecular epidemiology and mechanism exploration research were also summarized and recorded in our work. In addition, multidrug resistance and extensively drug resistance molecules were also extracted to interpret the molecular mechanisms that are responsible for cross resistance among anti-tuberculosis drugs. Finally, we constructed an omnibus repository named MycoResistance, a user friendly interface to conveniently browse, search and download all related entries. We hope that this elaborate database will serve as a beneficial resource for mechanism explanations, precise diagnosis and effective treatment of drug-resistant mycobacterial strains.
As one of the most urgent social and health problems in the world,
neurological diseases have always been attracted by researchers.
However, the pathological mechanisms and therapeutic approach are not
achieved. In addition to the established roles of oxidative stress,
inflammation and immune response, the changes of gut microbiota are also
closely related to the development of neurological diseases. Emerging
insights on the roles of gut microbiota have confirmed its
indispensability in the development of neurological diseases, including
neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric diseases. The dynamic
bidirectional communication pathway between gut microbiota and central
nervous system is called “gut-brain axis”, which involves immune,
metabolic and neural pathways. In this review, we discussed the complex
relationship between gut microbiota and the central nervous system from
the perspective of gut-brain axis, reviewed the mechanism of microbiota
in different neurological diseases, and prospected the employment of gut
microbiota in the therapeutic approach of those diseases.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
