Family-centered interventions targeting children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes appear to be effective in enhancing health outcomes. These interventions focused on traditional 2-parent families, and many did not report race or ethnicity. Given the increasing number of single-parent households and divorced parents, a need exists to explore and develop family-centered interventions that target nontraditional family structures as well as addressing cultural differences.
This review may help improve the understanding of postdivorce families and the dynamics involved in their care. Based upon this review, areas of assessment and intervention for nurse practitioners are identified.
Global shortages of nurses, limited resources, and increasing transnational crises mandate changes in healthcare planning and delivery. Disciplinary knowledge is integral to the development of nurse practitioners and researchers who can provide leadership role in addressing critical healthcare problems. This collaborative meditation examines how critical reflection about disciplinary knowledge in the context of nursing doctoral education facilitates this endeavor. Factors that constrain the development of disciplinary knowledge are discussed. Suggestions for further development of disciplinary knowledge are offered.
