Recently, the increase of natural disasters due to climate change has caused various fatal human and physical damages to our society and highlighted the importance of disaster prevention plan. However, cultural properties with national, ethnic, artistic, academic, and landscape values are not sufficiently systematic to protect them, even though they are exposed to natural disasters. Therefore, this study identifies the risk of cultural property from natural disasters, examines the status of institutional aspects for natural disaster reduction of cultural assets, and proposes improvement plan. For this purpose, we reviewed the system and contents of laws and plans related to natural disaster reduction and cultural property protection, and analyzed the interconnectivity. We also reviewed the general plan for safety management, comprehensive plans for the reduction of damage from storm and flood and cultural properties general plan of Seoul. As a result, for improvement plan for the protection of cultural assets from natural disasters, this study proposes to 'change the awareness of the importance of disaster prevention for cultural properties, enhance the linkage of laws and plans related to natural disasters and cultural assets, and prepare specific plans for reducing natural disasters of cultural properties'.
