Clitics have received great attention in recent years. Articles dealing with their syntactic or prosodic structure enrich the literature. But the question we are raising here is about where clitics take prosodic status. Is it in the lexical or in the postlexical component? We will argue that clitics are prosodized in the postlexical component. Arguments will be provided for the difference between the prefix that belongs to the Phonological Word formed in the lexical component and the clitic that belongs to the Clitic Group. The most important evidence that supports the idea that the clitic does not belong to the phonological word comes from Elision, a sandhi rule, that applies between words including clitics.
This paper studies the external sandhi rules Degemination, Elision, and Diphthongization in Brazilian Portuguese. It is shown that, when the second vowel of a VV sequence carries the phrasal stress, Degemination and Elision cannot apply to resolve the hiatus, whereas under the same circumstances, Diphthongization may occur. Within Optimality Theory, this restriction is explained by a Local Conjunction that controls vowel deletion as well as the alignment between the main foot and the head of the lexical word, which is irrelevant for the evaluation of outputs containing a diphthong, and therefore allows, in the latter case, the unmarked structure to emerge.
This paper considers some rules which are related to the rhythm either for having the syllabic trochee as the domain of application, or for producing moraic and syllabic trochees. KEY-WORDS: Syllable-timing, strees-timing, neutralization, degemination, elision.
Brazilian Portuguese has a vowel harmony rule which consists of the optional raising of the pretonic e and o vowels to / and u, respectively, if there is a high vowel in the following syllable. This is an old rule, the origin of which can be traced back to the Latin of the 4th century A.D. ' Because the rule is subject to multiple conditioning by both linguistic and social factors, it can be treated as a variable rule.
