Patau's syndrome, trisomy 13, is associated with multiple abnormalities of various organ systems, all of which present a challenge to the anaesthetist. Mortality in infancy is high; therefore there are few published reports regarding the anaesthetic management of patients with Patau's syndrome. Our case report describes the anaesthetic management for a 15-month-old male who underwent elective cleft palate repair and we review previous published cases. Anaesthetic considerations and the common abnormalities found in Trisomy 13, such as craniofacial, cardiac and renal defects are discussed.
