Published by WB Saunders, Philadelphia, 2002. 464 pages. £142.00.ISBN 0-7216-9695-3. This book is the long awaited 2nd edition of Resnick and Kang's ground-breaking 1991 atlas. The 1st edition of the atlas focused on the detailed anatomy of joints to the peripheral skeleton with correlation between MR sections and specimen photography. The new edition supplements the original by illustrating anatomical features of the extremities between the joints. This is a very welcome edition as the field of musculoskeletal MRI has expanded to involve imaging between the joints, the detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the peripheral muscles and the neurovascular structures has become essential. Most practitioners only come across these cases occasionally and are unable to retain the detailed anatomy required for accurate reporting. The 1st edition has seen regular use in my department and is a constant fixture on the bench when reporting musculoskeletal MRI. In addition, the atlas has proved useful in teaching MR-related musculoskeletal anatomy to registrars and advanced trainees. The new sections of the book have MR images based on normal volunteers, which is an important improvement over cadaver images that often show marked muscle atrophy. The accompanying line diagrams rather than anatomic photographs clearly illustrate the features seen on the MR sections. This atlas remains the best of its type for general use and the detailed labelling used throughout is one of its major strengths, ensuring its usefulness in the day-to-day interpretation of scans. This book will find a place on the reporting desk at every site reporting MR and will be used on a daily basis. The authors are to be congratulated for their efforts and the book is highly recommended. H G ALLOWAY Essentials of Musculoskeletal ImagingEdited by GY El-Khoury, DL Bennett and MD Stanley. Published by Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 2002. 752 pages. £73.00.ISBN 0-4430-6575-6.In the musculoskeletal world, the author's pedigree is impeccable. With the help of an impressive array of associate editors and contributors, Georges Y El-Khoury has produced a book that succeeds in clearly presenting the essentials of musculoskeletal imaging.Essentials of Musculoskeletal Imaging is easy to read, being written in a pleasing manner that makes complex topics appear simple. Although the principal author uses the expertise of two associate editors and 31 contributors to produce this book, he has co-written the majority of the material, ensuring that there is a uniformity of writing style and format. Each condition begins with an 'overview' or summary of the topic followed usually by pathology, and then a discussion on the appropriate use of imaging methods. The imaging findings are well described and are illustrated with a large number of examples. The book is divided into ten sections. The initial five sections discuss neoplasm, rheumatic diseases, metabolic bone disease, spinal disorders and paediatric bone disease. Each section consists of chapters that comprehensively discu...
