This paper examines the local vulnerability of households in two study communities in the east coast of Zanzibar focusing on food security, which is negatively impacted by climate variability and change. Findings have indicated that overall the local people in eastern coast of Zanzibar are insecure with respect to most major sources of food. Households solely dependent on natural resources through farming, fishing, livestock and poultry farming, have been found to be more vulnerable to food insecurity as these activities are facing considerable uncertainties associated with climate change and variability as well as other stress factors. Agricultural failure resulting from various factors, including local climate variability, coupled with uncertainty of fishing has many pushed households towards increasing dependence on market for their staple food supplies. Therefore, this enhances the household's vulnerability to food insecurity especially among households with low purchasing power. With increasing demand of fisheries resources in urban areas associated with the expanding tourism industry in the study area the price for fisheries resources has increased, causing the poor, including the fishers, to consume less fish and other seafood, and thereby limiting their dietary protein intakes.
This study is based on a study undertaken to assess how ecotourism has influenced biodiversity conservation in Jozani–Chwaka Bay National Park (JCBNP). It involved two communities surrounding the park, namely Pete and Kitogani. Field data were collected using structured questionnaires, key informant interviews and field observations. Questionnaires were administered to 76 households, whereas key informant interviews were conducted with foresters and JCBNP officials. Data analysis was undertaken using standard statistical methods. Findings from the study show that biodiversity management in the JCBNP has improved considerably after the introduction of ecotourism. The number of endemic colobus monkeys (Piliocolobus kirkii) and other rare species has increased. However, this achievement has been attained by restricting surrounding communities from using forest resources without providing alternative sources of livelihood. Findings also show that the benefits from ecotourism do not reach individual households, but the community as whole, in form of various social services. This has caused some resentment among the local people leading to their reluctance to reduce their direct use of ecosystem services available in the JCBNP, claiming that they cannot sustain their livelihood without such services. This has become a major source of conflict between the JCBNP and surrounding communities. Increased awareness and knowledge on biodiversity conservation would be needed for the communities surrounding the park to realize the potential and long‐term benefits of ecotourism, and hence the need for their increased involvement in biodiversity management.
This paper assesses the perceptions of the smallholder rice farmers in Zanzibar on the use of conventional and indigenous knowledge (IK) for seasonal weather forecasting and farming decisions. It draws data from a study that was conducted in two rice fields in Central district, Unguja, and four rice fields in Micheweni district, Pemba. The paper mainly employs qualitative data from focus group discussions and interviews. The results reveal that farmers, particularly from rain-fed rice fields, have limited access to conventional seasonal weather forecasts, and thus rely on the knowledge of traditional weather forecasting. This is ascribed to their negative perceptions on conventional seasonal weather forecasts, limited access to extension services, and limited access to media, such as television and radio that provide weather information, which is attributed to low rural electrification and poverty. The results also showed that smallholder rice farmers in the islands use their own indigenous knowledge to forecast weather and utilise it for the preparation of fields, planting and harvesting of rice. The study highlights that, recent fluctuations in rice production is attributable to the variability of rainfall, rainfall seasons, and incidences of extreme floods. This illustrate the challenges of both conventional and traditional weather forecasting systems, and underscore the need and importance of integrating traditional and conventional weather forecasting to increase access to conventional weather forecasting to boost resilience to the impacts of current and future climate changes.
Climate variability related events such as drought and associated food shortages are not new along the coast of Zanzibar, but are projected to increase with the impacts of global climate change. This paper examines the 'internal' characteristics that make Zanzibar's coastal communities vulnerable to these and other changes, focusing on the factors that affect adaptive capacity (i.e. household and community assets) and sensitivity (i.e. livelihood activities and diversification). The sustainable livelihood approach and framework, especially the five capitals or assets, provided a lens to examine households' capital stocks and the factors influencing access to these, as well as the outcomes for livelihood activities. Access to different capitals and assets were found to affect the range and choices of livelihood activities available to households as well as their ability to cope and adapt to existing and new risk. Our analysis shows how households on the drier and harsher east coast of the Zanzibar islands are particularly sensitive to climate variability and change in concert with other livelihoods challenges. This is primarily due to their high dependence on natural-resource based livelihood activities, which are already facing pressures. Moreover, low levels of most livelihood capitals limit the choices households have and undermine their adaptive capacity and ability to bounce back from climate and other shocks and stressors.
