Fundamental to the formulation and implementation of contemporary subnational economic planning policy is a more detailed understanding of geographic space and the concept of region (Boudeville 181). Thus, there has been a continuing academic interest, especially in geography, in the nature of regions, including a concern for their existence as real identifiable entities (Gilbert [19], Hartshorne [31] and Grigg [26, 271). In recent years, particular attention has been given to the development of precise methods for delimiting regions (Johnson [36]).This paper falls within the recent focus of regional investigation. Its objectives are, first, to provide a brief review of the concept of regions and means employed for delimiting them and, second, to test empirically an approach to regional definition put forth elsewhere by one of the authors (Brown and Horton [13] and Brown, Odland, and Golledge [14]). The ensuing discussion gives consideration to uniform regions in order to provide perspective, but its primary focus is upon functional regions and nodal regions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
