Terme issu des années 1960, l’ethnomédecine prend racine dès 1917 dans le travail de W.H. Rivers qui s’intéresse à la manière de soigner des sociétés non occidentales. Elle est comprise en sciences humaines comme l’étude des médecines traditionnelles et des logiques internes à une culture qui émet des conduites, des discours et des représentations relatives à la maladie. En médecine, elle prend plutôt la forme d’une synthèse entre la médecine occidentale et les médecines traditionnelles des pays non occidentaux de laquelle émerge une approche ethnomédicale holistique et pluridisciplinaire.
