Este artículo examina un cambio de paradigma en las esferas estéticas y sociales de la Argentina del cambio del siglo XIX al XX. Las élites de la nación del fin de siglo inicialmente dominaban los nuevos medios como las revistas ilustradas y el cine, pero rápidamente se vieron desplazadas por estrellas locales e internacionales y por concursos que comunicaban mejor las aspiraciones y deseos de un público que, de esta manera, iba adquiriendo una visibilidad sin precedentes. En este trabajo sostengo que los medios emergentes de la cultura de masas, y específicamente el cine y sus derivados, proveían foros dentro de los cuales los residentes del país, todavía privados de muchos derechos civiles, podían ensayar otras formas de ciudadanía que anticipaban formas de participación sociales y políticas por venir.
