This study was an experimental evaluation of an intervention designed to reduce conduct problems among children of battered women. Participants were 36 families (mothers and children) in which the mother had sought shelter because of relationship violence and had at least 1 child (4-9 years old) with clinical levels of conduct problems. The intervention consisted of 2 primary components: (a) providing instrumental and emotional support and (b) teaching child management skills to mothers. Families were randomly assigned to either the intervention condition or the existing services comparison condition and were assessed on 5 occasions over 16 months after shelter departure. Compared with families receiving existing services, children in the intervention condition improved at a faster rate, the proportion of children displaying clinical levels of conduct problems was greatly diminished, and mothers displayed greater improvements in child management skills.
The present study demonstrates that estrogen affects the human atrial myocardium and mediates protective actions through estrogen receptors-(ER) dependent signaling. Estrogen substantially modulates the local RAS via downregulation of ACE and simultaneous upregulation of ACE2, AT2R and MAS expression levels. This is indicative of a shift of the classical RAS/ACE axis to the alternative, protective RAS/ACE2 axis. In support of this view, estrogen attenuated the expression of RAS-associated downstream effectors, LOX-1, and ICAM-1. A specific antagonist of ERa reversed the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of estrogen in paced and nonpaced atrial tissue slices. In summary, our data demonstrate the existence of protective effects of estrogen in atrial tissue from elderly men which are at least in part, mediated by the regulation of local RAS homeostasis. AbstractData from animal experiments and clinical investigations suggest that components of the renin-angiotensin system are markedly affected by sex hormones. However, whether estrogen affects human atrial myocardium has not been investigated yet. In this study, we determined the effects of estrogen on key components of atrial renin-angiotensin system: angiotensin-converting enzyme, responsible for generation of angiotensin II and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, counteracting majority of AngII effects, and different renin-angiotensin system receptors, AT1R, AT2R, and MAS. First, the expression levels of estrogen receptors mRNA were determined in right atrial appendages obtained from patients undergoing heart surgery. The amounts of estrogen receptor a and estrogen receptor b mRNA were similar between women (n ¼ 14) and men (n ¼ 10). Atrial tissue slices (350 mm) were prepared from male donors which were exposed to estrogen (1-100 nM; n ¼ 21) or stimulated at 4 Hz for 24 h in the presence or absence of 100 nM estrogen (n ¼ 16), respectively. The administration of estrogen did not change mRNA levels of estrogen receptors, but activated MAP kinases, Erk1/2. Furthermore, estrogen increased the amounts of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2-mRNA (1.89 AE 0.23; P < 0.05) but reduced that of angiotensin-converting enzyme-mRNA (0.78 AE 0.07, P < 0.05). In addition, the transcript levels of AT2R and MAS were upregulated by estrogen. Pacing of tissue slices significantly increased the angiotensin-converting enzyme/angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 ratio at both the mRNA and protein level. During pacing, administration of estrogen substantially lowered the angiotensin-converting enzyme/angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 ratio at the transcript (0.92 AE 0.21 vs. 2.12 AE 0.27 at 4 Hz) and protein level (0.94 AE 0.20 vs. 2.14 AE 0.3 at 4 Hz). Moreover, estrogen elicited anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects on renin-angiotensin system-associated downstream effectors such as pro-oxidative LOX-1 and pro-inflammatory ICAM-1. Project Support is an intervention designed to decrease coercive patterns of aggressive discipline and increase positive parenting. This research evaluates Project Support in a sample of families reported to Children's Protective Services (CPS) for allegations of physical abuse or neglect; 35 families with a child between 3- and 8-years-old participated. In all families, CPS allowed the children to remain in the family home while the family received services. Families were randomly assigned to receive either Project Support or services as usual, which were provided by CPS or CPS-contracted service providers. To evaluate intervention effects, a multimethod, multi-informant assessment strategy was used that included data from mothers' reports, direct observation of parents' behavior, and review of CPS records for re-referrals for child maltreatment. Families who received Project Support services showed greater decreases than families who received services as usual in the following areas: mothers' perceived inability to manage childrearing responsibilities, mothers' reports of harsh parenting, and observations of ineffective parenting practices. Only 5.9% of families in the Project Support condition had a subsequent referral to CPS for child maltreatment, compared with 27.7% of families in the comparison condition. The results suggest that Project Support may be a promising intervention for reducing child maltreatment among families in which it has occurred.
A measure of Facebook-related mate-retention tactics was developed to investigate the relationship between online behaviors and intimate partner aggression. One hundred and seventy-seven young adults (65 men, 112 women) completed questionnaires that included measures of online and offline mate-retention tactics, Facebook jealousy, Facebook surveillance, and intimate partner violence. A factor analysis yielded four subscales for the Facebook Mate-Retention Tactic Inventory (FMRTI): Care and Affection, Jealousy and Surveillance, Possession Signals, and Punishment of Infidelity Threat. The FMRTI total scores were positively correlated with Facebook jealousy, Facebook surveillance, and use of offline mate-retention tactics. The Jealousy and Surveillance subscale uniquely predicted intimate partner psychological and physical aggression over and above existing measures. Facebook mate-retention tactics fully mediated the relation between Facebook jealousy and both intimate partner psychological and physical aggression. The current study provides preliminary evidence for conceptualizing Facebook as an environment for the use of mate-retention tactics that have real-life implications for intimate partner violence.
Behavior problems were examined across 3 groups of children (3-12 years of age), living in families characterized by recent physical spousal violence. The groups were (a) 47 children who reported observing marital violence that included the threat or use of knives or guns (observed); (b) 57 children who did not report witnessing marital violence involving knives or guns but whose mothers reported that violence involving knives or guns had occurred in a recent marital dispute (occurred); and (c) 51 children who did not report witnessing marital violence involving knives or guns and whose mothers also reported no violence involving knives or guns (neither). Children in the observed group displayed higher levels of behavior problems than did children in the neither group, but they did not differ from children in the occurred group. Children in the occurred group also displayed higher levels of behavior problems than did children in the neither group.Although empirical investigation of the effects of spousal violence on children is still in its infancy, one conclusion has received almost unanimous support: Children of battered women are at a substantially increased risk for behavior problems compared with children of nonviolent community families (e.g.,
