El objetivo de este trabajo es reflexionar sobre el papel de la pintura de Tigua en el desarrollo del discurso identitario indígena andino ecuatoriano. Este escrito examina el proceso discursivo que presentan sus pinturas desde sus inicios hasta la actualidad. Para ello se definen tres estadios de la pintura: Pre-género, Género y Post-género. El análisis de las características técnicas y temáticas que las definen y diferencian posibilita abrir reflexiones sobre la transformación de las identidades indígenas andinas. De forma paralela y como telón de fondo, este texto aborda cuestiones generales sobre el surgimiento de la pintura en estas comunidades andinas ecuatorianas, sobre las modificaciones que este nuevo recurso desató a nivel socioeconómico y sobre el papel principal de los "actores externos" en todo el proceso.
