Abstract:The vast and ever-growing amount of agricultural and food wastes has become a major concern throughout the whole world. Therefore, strategies for their processing and value-added reuse are needed to enable a sustainable utilization of feedstocks and reduce the environmental burden. By-products of potato, tomato, cereals and olive arise in significant amounts in European countries and are consequently of high relevance. Due to their composition with various beneficial ingredients, the waste products can be valorized by different techniques leading to economic and environmental advantages. This paper focuses on the waste generation during industrial processing of potato, tomato, cereals and olives within the European Union and reviews state-of-the-art technologies for their valorization. Furthermore, current applications, future perspectives and challenges are discussed.
The world is confronted with the depletion of natural resources due to their unsustainable use and the increasing size of populations. In this context, the efficient use of by-products, residues and wastes generated from agro-industrial and food processing opens the perspective for a wide range of benefits. In particular, legume residues are produced yearly in very large amounts and may represent an interesting source of plant proteins that contribute to satisfying the steadily increasing global protein demand. Innovative biorefinery extraction cascades may also enable the recovery of further bioactive molecules and fibers from these insufficiently tapped biomass streams. This review article gives a summary of the potential for the valorization of legume residual streams resulting from agro-industrial processing and more particularly for pea, green bean and chickpea by-products/wastes. Valuable information on the annual production volumes, geographical origin and state-of-the-art technologies for the extraction of proteins, fibers and other bioactive molecules from this source of biomass, is exhaustively listed and discussed. Finally, promising applications, already using the recovered fractions from pea, bean and chickpea residues for the formulation of feed, food, cosmetic and packaging products, are listed and discussed.
Crystallization kinetics and melting behaviour of poly(propylene terephthalate) (PPT) were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and hot-stage optical microscopy. Isothermal crystallization kinetics was analysed according to the Avrami treatment. The effects of temperature and duration of melting on the overall rate of isothermal crystallization were studied: the rate was found to decrease with increasing melting temperature and melting time. This result was discussed on the basis of the gradual destruction of predetermined athermal nuclei. Values of the Avrami exponent close to 3 were obtained, regardless of the adopted thermal treatment and the crystallization temperature, T c , in agreement with a crystallization process originating from predetermined nuclei and characterized by three-dimensional spherulitic growth. As a matter of fact, spacefilling spherulites were observed by optical microscopy at all T c 's, independent of the applied thermal treatments. For each of them, the rate of crystallization became lower as T c increased, as usual at low undercooling where the crystallization process is controlled by nucleation. The observed multiple endotherms, which are commonly displayed by polyesters, were influenced by T c and ascribed to melting and recrystallization processes. Linear and non-linear treatments were applied in order to estimate the equilibrium melting temperature for PPT, by using the corrected melting temperatures. The non-linear estimation yielded an about 33°C higher value with respect to the one obtained by means of the linear approach. Through the analysis of secondary nucleation theory, the classical II→III transition was found to occur at a temperature of 194°C. The average work of chain folding for nucleation was determined to be c. 5.2 kcal/mol. The heat of fusion was correlated to the specific heat increment for samples with different degree of crystallinity and the results were interpreted on the basis of the existence of an interphase, whose amount was found to depend on the thermal treatment the polymer was subjected to.

Nowadays the issues related to the end of life of traditional plastics are very urgent due to the important pollution problems that plastics have caused. Biodegradable plastics can help to try to mitigate these problems, but even bioplastics need much attention to carefully evaluate the different options for plastic waste disposal. In this Minireview, three different end-of-life scenarios (composting, recycling, and upcycling) were evaluated in terms of literature review. As a result, the ability of bioplastics to be biodegraded by composting has been related to physical variables and materials characteristics. Hence, it is possible to deduce that the process is mature enough to be a good way to minimize bioplastic waste and valorize it for the production of a fertilizer. Recycling and upcycling options, which could open up many interesting new scenarios for the production of high-value materials, are less studied. Research in this area can be strongly encouraged.
