Eliminar la pobreza es un problema que enfrenta toda sociedad, en este sentido, pensar la forma de comprenderla y medirla es el reto principal de la política pública. Por tanto, en el presente artículo se propone un índice de pobreza multidimensional para la ciudad de Medellín, con el fin de servir como instrumento para la toma decisiones de política pública y aportar al monitoreo de los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible 2030. Se sigue la metodología propuesta por Alkire y Foster, un método de conteo que identifica a los pobres de acuerdo a las privaciones que sufren. Entre los resultados, la medición realizada indica que para el año 2014 en Medellín, la incidencia de la pobreza fue de 20%; mientras el promedio de privaciones que experimentan las personas pobres es de 40%. En conclusión, las dimensiones de desescolarización y estándar de vida son la que más aportan a la explicación de la pobreza multidimensional de la población. Por lo tanto, se sugiere a la política pública institucionalizar una mediada multidimensional de pobreza con los datos que produce la ciudad.
