The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus, Illiger 1815) is the largest canid in South America, with an estimated population of approximately 20,000 concentrated individuals, mainly (90%) in Brazil. On the International Union for Conservation of Nature-IUCN website, the maned wolf is listed as Near Threatened. The ex situ populations have low reproductive efficiency (Songsasen et al., 2006), and several challenges remain, including the need for basic research on reproduction and assisted breeding in captivity (Paula et al., 2008) to improve the husbandry and reproductive fitness of captive individuals to increase the population (Songsasen & Rodden, 2010). This study aimed to describe the semen freezing collect from two captivity maned wolves using methods applied to domestic dogs and to provide basis for future conservation studies on reproduction of these species.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
