O jejum intermitente (JI) é um termo que abrange protocolos populares e pode ser subdividido em 3 categorias, como o jejum em dias alternados, o jejum durante o dia inteiro e a alimentação com restrição de tempo. O JI tem recebido um aumento considerável de interesse como estratégia para controle de peso e/ou melhoria da saúde metabólica. Com essas estratégias, o padrão de alimentação e os horários de ingestão dos alimentos são alterados de forma que os indivíduos passam por períodos repetidos de jejum. Esta revisão fornece um comentário sobre a literatura, focando nos efeitos do JI para determinar se eles são eficazes em melhorar a composição corporal e os marcadores clínicos de saúde associados a doenças. Em análise, os estudos apontam para o JI como uma estratégia segura para perda de peso, impactando positivamente também outros parâmetros de saúde. Ainda há muito a aprender sobre jejum intermitente (em suas diversas formas); no entanto, as descobertas até o momento servem para destacar caminhos promissores para pesquisas futuras.
