El Síndrome de May-Thurner (SMT) o de compresión de la vena ilíaca, se caracteriza por una compresión de la vena ilíaca común izquierda ocasionada por la arteria ilíaca común derecha. Esta compresión se traduce en una lesión de la íntima que provoca la formación de bridas en el lumen vascular que obstruyen el flujo venoso. Generalmente es asintomático y es más frecuente en mujeres. El diagnóstico se puede realizar con ultrasonido vascular u otros medios no invasivos; como tomografía axial computarizada (TAC) o resonancia magnética (RMN). El tratamiento se enfoca en disminuir la obstrucción del flujo y el manejo de las complicaciones, tales como trombosis venosa profunda (TVP) o tromboembolismo pulmonar (TEP).
