Introdução: Embora sejam diversos os fatores que predispõe um idoso a ser institucionalizado, distingue-se, como fator comum entre a maioria dos casos, as complicações fisiológicas, como o comprometimento cognitivo, dependências funcionais e necessidades que carecem de um cuidador profissional para a realização das atividades básicas de vida. Objetivo: Verificar a relação entre o estado nutricional e a capacidade funcional de idosos em instituições de longa permanência para idosos de uma cidade na região metropolitana de São Paulo. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal descritivo quantitativo com amostra probabilística, desenvolvido com idosos em duas instituições de longa permanência privadas. A amostra foi composta por 46 idosos e os dados foram coletados por meio de questionário contendo as variáveis sociodemográficas, avaliação nutricional por meio da mini avaliação nutricional-reduzida, dados antropométricos e avaliação funcional. Resultados: A média de idade foi de 79,5±10,71 anos, sendo a maioria do sexo feminino (58,7%), solteiros (36,3%) e com até 8 anos de escolaridade (64,9%). Quanto ao perfil nutricional 39,1% se encontravam em magreza, 39,1% eutrofia e 21,7% em obesidade. Verificou-se que a maioria apresentava risco nutricional (66,7%) e apenas 15,2% eram independentes para todas as atividades básicas de vida diária. Conclusão: Os resultados mostraram que a maioria dos idosos tinha risco nutricional e tinham dependência funcional e que o aumento do risco nutricional se relacionou com a redução do índice de massa corporal, do peso e com aumento do grau de dependência para as atividades básicas de vida diária.
