In today’s world, where uncertainty and the rapidity of technological changes predominate, companies need to generate and adopt knowledge continuously in order to build a sustainable competitive advantage. In this context, analyzing the collaborative relationships existing between the university and firms is relevant. The aim of this chapter is to explore the role of the university as a generator and disseminator of knowledge, as well as the difficulties it faces in making the results of its research available to the business world. The collaboration efforts between the academic and business worlds are assessed in order to ultimately propose the review of teaching, continuing education, and consulting as knowledge dissemination channels. This research project has been conducted in the context of a Mexican university. Besides the findings of the current and future research projects, the matter of the question is the redefinition of the university and its role in society. In business schools in particular, the pending issue is to discuss the basic aim of academic research in management.
PurposeNew ways of working have rapidly increased in organizations, promising employees a better control over their work time, space, and more autonomy. The present study analyzes the relationship between new ways of working and employee engagement and productivity.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to evaluate organizational practices developed based on flexible schemes and the relevance of employee engagement for better productivity based on digital tools. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.FindingsNew ways of work requires an integration of workspaces' design, social interaction, and individual wellness. Organizations need to recognize how employees' trust, commitment, and passion are fundamental to face current and future changes. Flexibility in time and space and digital tools for work are critical.Practical implicationsA personalization of organizational practices to support individual well-being and flexible and hybrid schemes of work are needed. Developing policies collaboratively to work together respectfully in a hybrid environment is necessary.Social implicationsHybrid work format is allowing women to balance career and childcare, reducing the wage gap with men. The green imperative has also played a role reducing the amount of carbon monoxide produced via commuter.Originality/valueThe present study exposes how organizational practices must ensure employee well-being and autonomy to perform their tasks. In this regard, employees need to be recognized as individuals, physically and mentally. Attempting to force a one-size-fit-all solution can have detrimental effects on the workforce, particularly on women, people of lower socioeconomic status, and people in less advanced economies. Personalization requests empowerment and democratization at work.
La gestión de conocimiento es un proceso determinante para sostener una ventaja competitiva sostenible en empresas que compiten en entornos dinámicos. Estas empresas no solamente tienen recursos tecnológicos relevantes, sino que deben mostrar flexibilidad y capacidad administrativa para coordinar efectivamente sus competencias internas. Los procesos de generación y transferencia del conocimiento son analizados en esta investigación por medio de un estudio de casos de cuatro pequeñas empresas del sector de las tecnologías de la información en Barcelona. Como resultado del estudio, se ha diseñado un modelo conceptual en el cual la generación de conocimiento es posible a través de la adquisición de conocimiento externo y de la creación interna de conocimiento. Este último proceso es facilitado por la motivación personal y por la oportunidad de aprender de los miembros de la organización. La transferencia del conocimiento se lleva a cabo a través de la utilización de mecanismos formales e informales de comunicación. Aun cuando los mecanismos formales como los documentos y el Intranet proveen de un fuerte apoyo a este proceso, los empleados prefieren transferir su conocimiento de una forma personal, cara a cara.
