SUMMARY Cryptosporidium spp: In cattle: Its potential as a contaminant of water resources.Cryptosporidium is a protozoan that has caused numerous waterborne disease outbreaks. The highest concentration of this enteroparasite in surface water was detected in areas with livestock farming practices. The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp in cattle. Samples were taken from stools of 106 artificially reared calves divided into two groups: the first (n1 = 60) aged between two weeks and two months, and the second (n2 = 46), less than two weeks old. Samples were concentrated by the Sheather's method and Kinyoun staining was applied for identification of oocysts. A total of 84% of calves were Cryptosporidium spp. positive. This high value indicates the high potential of contamination of water resources through runoff that carries cattle manure.

Con un diseño y funcionamiento apropiado la filtración rápida puede actuar como una barrera eficaz pero no garantiza la eliminación completa de ooquistes de Cryptosporidium ni quistes de Giardia.PALABrAs cLAVes: Giardia, Cryptosporidium, tratamiento, agua potable sUMMArY: Rapid sand filter for the study of removal of protozoan enteroparasites in water With the objective of evaluating the filtration removal of cysts of Giardia duodenalis and oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. in water, a rapid gravity filter, laboratory scale, was constructed with sand as filter material. the filter was operated at constant rate (200 ml/min) and ascending level. the bed thickness (0.75 m) and the retention
