The aims of the longitudinal study were to investigate the development of social problem solving (SPS) among adolescents (N ¼ 180) in Hungary, to describe the nature of correlations between the raters' judgements (child, mother, teacher) and to examine what the correlations are between SPS factors and family background. At the beginning of the study students were 12-year-olds and they were 14 at the last time of measurement. The questionnaire of SPS was adapted [SPSI-R:S, D'Zurilla, T. J., Nezu, A., & Maydeu-Olivares, A. (2002). Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised (SPSI-R): Technical manual. North Tonawanda, NY: MultiHealth Systems]. The factors were the following: negative and positive problem orientation (NPO, PPO, respectively), rational problem solving (RPS), impulsivity/ carelessness style (ICS) and avoidance style (AS). Based on self-assessment, NPO, RPS, ICS and ACS show increasing tendency with age; however, in the case of PPO, significant age differences have not been found. The mothers' ratings are the same in the case of NPO, PPO and RPS, but they think that their 12-year-olds show lower impulsivity and avoidance than their children of 13 and 14 years. According to the teachers' rating, NPO, RPS and AS show increasing tendency; however, the values of ICS and PPO decrease with age. Correlations between children's and mothers' ratings are strongest, and the most divergent evaluations were given by teachers and mothers. Parents' educational levels influence the SPS factors differently: mothers' educational level has an effect on NPO and ICS; fathers' educational level has an impact on RPS in all years. The effects of free-time activities in family are stronger than those of the time spent learning with children in all years.
Acquired equivalence (AE) is a form of feedback-based associative learning where the subject learns that two or more stimuli are equivalent in terms of being mapped onto the same outcomes or responses. While several studies dealt with how various neurological and psychiatric conditions affect performance on AE tasks (typically with small populations), studies dealing with AE in healthy subjects are rare, and no study has ever made an attempt to plot the development of this form of learning from the childhood through adulthood. In a cross-sectional study, we assessed the AE performance of 265 healthy subjects aged 3 to 52 years with the computer-based Rutgers Equivalence Test (Fish-Face Test, FFT). The test assesses three main aspects of AE: the efficiency of pair learning, the efficiency of the retrieval of acquired pairs, and the ability to generalise previous knowledge to a new stimulus that partially overlaps with the previous ones. It has been demonstrated in imaging studies that the initial, pair learning phase of this specific test is dependent on the basal ganglia, while its generalization phase requires the hippocampi. We found that both pair learning and retrieval exhibited development well into adulthood, but generalisation did not, after having reached its adult-like level by the age of 6. We propose that these findings might be explained by the integrative encoding theory that focuses on the parallel dopaminergic midbrain-striatum/midbrain-hippocampus connections.
A keresztmetszeti vizsgálatok eredményei az egyes életkori csoportokba tartozó gyerekekről nyújtanak képet, általuk jó becslést kaphatunk arról, hogy a mintába tartozó diá-kok esetében milyen változások következnek be, ám ezek a vizsgálatok arra nem adnak lehetőséget, hogy az egyéni változásokat elemezni lehessen. Erre a longitudinális (hosszmetszeti) felmérések alkalmasak, melyek pontosítják a keresztmetszeti kutatások adatait, megvizsgálhatók a feltárt jelenségek időbeli előzményei (Csapó, 2007;Józsa, 2013).
The aim of our research was to investigate social and emotional skills that determine pre-schoolers' aggressive and pro-social behaviours in stressful situations. The sample of the empirical study consisted of 119 (36-48, 49-60 and 61-72 months) Hungarian children from six pre-schools. Instruments that were used: Coping strategy self-report and teacher-report questionnaires as well as hypothetical social situations interviews with puppets. The statistical analysis of pre-school teachers' questionnaires showed that verbal and physical aggression as coping strategies were used in a significantly higher proportion (p , 0.05) by 61-72-month-old children than by the younger age groups. In the oldest age group, boys were rated significantly more aggressive than girls (p , 0.05). However, significant age or gender effects could not be demonstrated on pro-social behaviour. Self-report questionnaires have not yielded any significant results concerning age and gender differences in either studied dimension. Hypothetical social situations resulted in significantly less-aggressive responses by 36-48-month-old children than by the two other age groups (p , 0.05). Data obtained by self-report and teacher-report questionnaires on coping strategies and pro-social behaviour showed moderate correlations (r ¼ 0.325-0.478).
