O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar como estudantes de um terceiro ano do Ensino Médio de uma escola estadual da cidade de Cachoeira do Sul/RS resolvem questões que envolvem o conceito de volume. Para tanto, adotam-se princípios de uma pesquisa qualitativa, cuja produção de dados se deu por meio das respostas obtidas pelos estudantes a partir de um formulário online, composto por três questões que buscaram investigar alguns aspectos relacionados ao conceito de volume, como por exemplo, relações entre sólidos, capacidade, princípio de Arquimedes, entre outros. A proposta da atividade surgiu durante uma disciplina de Geometria em que os três primeiros autores, alunos, de um doutorado em Ensino de Ciências e Matemática, frequentaram no primeiro semestre de 2021, sob orientação do quarto autor. A atividade foi desenvolvida nas turmas em que a primeira autora é docente. A análise de conteúdo realizada considera registros de representação semiótica mobilizados pelos estudantes que participaram da investigação. Os resultados apontaram que, nas duas primeiras questões, menos de 20% conseguiram definir adequadamente os conceitos propostos em cada atividade e, na terceira questão, 36% dos alunos apresentaram um conhecimento adequado. Apesar dos alunos estarem concluindo o Ensino Médio, percebeu-se que, em média, 57,6% dos estudantes não atingiram o objetivo, apresentando conhecimento inadequado o que aponta para a pertinência de retomar tais conceitos.
