Introdução: identificada pela primeira vez no em 1979 em felinos, na Flórida (EUA), “Florida Spots” trata-se de uma afecção de córnea que acomete cães e gatos, caracterizada por áreas de opacificação do estroma corneano, podendo se apresentar de forma única ou múltipla, uni ou bilateral, de formatos variados, com coloração branco-acinzentada. Sua origem não está esclarecida, sendo levantadas hipóteses de exposição à radiação ultravioleta, infecção fúngica ou por micobactérias. Os animais aparentemente são assintomáticos, sem sinais de dor, danos ao epitélio corneal, desconforto ou perda de visão. Os estudos também evidenciam maior prevalência em animais de regiões tropicais, com acesso a rua e com animais contactantes. Objetivo: O objetivo do trabalho é fazer uma revisão sobre o assunto pretendendo orientar melhor os profissionais, e incitar a busca por mais informações acerca do tema. Metodologia: trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica baseada em busca nas plataformas de pesquisa SciELO e Google Acadêmico, usando as palavras chave Florida, Spots, Opacificação. Resultados: o diagnóstico é dado pela inspeção visual e anamnese, visto que as alterações são macroscopicamente visíveis. Estudos relatam não ter sido isolado nenhum agente patogênico e que a terapia com uso de antifúngicos, antimicrobianos e anti-inflamatórios é ineficaz. Há ainda estudos que sugerem possível infecção por uma microbactéria pela característica das lâminas histológicas quando utilizado corante Ziehl-Neelsen carbolfucsina. Não são relatadas alterações em exames de rotina, como hemograma e bioquímicos. Apesar de não se conhecer a causa dessa anomalia e da mesma não causar aparentes sinais clínicos, acredita-se ter caráter infeccioso por acometer mais os animais com acesso a rua, e consequentemente que tem contato com outros animais. Também não é observada cura das áreas acometidas. Conclusão: Por serem facilmente observadas a olho nu, essas opacificações são, muitas vezes, o motivo de busca de atendimento veterinário por causarem apreensão nos tutores, que temem a perda de visão do animal. A falta de esclarecimento sobre o tema evidencia a necessidade de mais estudos acerca do mesmo. Além disso, é importante salientar aos tutores a importância da posse responsável, orientando sobre os perigos que animal corre ao estar exposto ao ambiente sem devida supervisão.
Introdução: O hiperadrencorticismo é uma enfermidade de caráter endócrino, ocasionada pelo excesso de cortisol circulante. É mais relatado em animais idosos e de meia idade, os cães são mais acometidos, podendo ser de origem espontânea ou iatrogênica. Os sinais mais observados pelos tutores envolvem polidipsia, poliúria, polifagia, distensão abdominal e fraqueza. O diagnóstico é baseado nos achados do exame físico e clínico, juntamente com exames complementares, como exames de imagem, hematológicos, urinálise e testes endócrinos específicos. Existem diversas opções de tratamento, deve ser levado em consideração o estado geral do paciente, o tipo de hiperadrenocorticismo e a situação financeira do tutor para definir a melhor opção. Objetivo: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo relatar o caso clínico de um paciente canino da raça Yorkshire Terrier diagnosticado com hiperadrenocorticismo. Relato de Caso: Foi atendido no Hospital de Clínicas Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Pelotas um canino da raça Yorkshire Terrier, macho, castrado, com 13 anos de idade e pesando 2,600kg. No primeiro momento a tutora relatou que o animal apresentava fraqueza nos membros pélvicos, polidipsia e dificuldade de subir ao sofá, além de hematúria, polaquiúria, disúria e alguns quadros de incontinência. Foi solicitada a realização de exames complementares, dentre eles a ultrassonografia, tendo resultado sugestivo para hipercortisolismo hipófise dependente, pelo achado de adrenomegalia bilateral. Foi solicitado exame bioquímico que apresentou alterações de fosfatase alcalina, albumina, creatinina, CK e aumento de triglicérides e na urinálise, também solicitada, foi observado bacteriúria intensa. Discussão: No animais com hormônio adrenocorticotrófico (ACTH) a poliúria é um dos principais motivos que levam o tutor a buscar ajuda profissional, além da polifagia, que está presente na maioria dos casos. Paciente com essa enfermidade podem apresentar alterações hematológicas com linfopenia e neutrofilia, assim como alterações bioquímicas, como aumento de fosfatase alcalina, na urinálise os quadros de bacteriúria são comuns, corroborando com o caso relatado. Conclusão: Essa enfermidade tem curso lento e o tratamento pode ter efeitos colaterais, por isso a importância de levar em consideração o estado geral do paciente. A terapêutica definida neste caso foi Trilostano 1,3mg BID e o tutor relatou melhora após o início do tratamento.
Introdução: A cirurgia reconstrutiva é caracterizada pela utilização de técnicas de reconstrução tecidual, sendo uma técnica para o tratamento de feridas abertas que são incapazes de fazer a cicatrização por primeira intenção devido ao excesso de tensão. Objetivo: Descrever os princípios da cirurgia reconstrutivas na clínica cirúrgica de pequenos animais. Material e métodos: Realizada revisão da literatura de trabalhos nacionais do ano de 2009 a 2019, utilizando como base de dados o Google Acadêmico. Resultados: As técnicas de reconstrução tecidual têm sido bastante utilizadas no tratamento de feridas abertas em cães e gatos, visto que o sistema circulatório local dessas espécies favorece a cicatrização da técnica e que casos de feridas extensas pode ocorrer a inviabilidade tecidual e longo tempo de cicatrização por segunda intenção. As técnicas são classificadas como retalhos de padrão axial, tubulares, bolsa ou dobradiça, interpolação, transposição, rotacional, avanço e também como incisões de relaxamento, sendo conhecidos como simples, pontilhada múltiplas, incisão em V-Y e Z. Os retalhos tem como vantagem a cobertura e suprimento sanguíneo da ferida de forma imediata, enquanto que as incisões de relaxamento são menos indicadas, podendo utilizar para cobrir estruturas de membros. A escolha depende de inúmeros fatores como local da lesão, elasticidade tecidual da região acometida, suporte sanguíneo local, qualidade do leito doador e receptor e experiência do cirurgião. É recomendado a verificação dos pontos de maior tensão e possibilidade de expansão da pele que é utilizada, visto que bordas tensionadas podem levar a necrose por pressão. As complicações mais comuns observadas nesse tipo de cirurgia são deiscência da sutura, infecção, seroma, edema, cicatrização exacerbada e necrose. Atualmente sabe-se que grande parte das falhas tem aparecimento em até 48 horas de pós-operatório. Conclusão: A cirurgia reconstrutiva tem sido amplamente utilizada e estudada nos últimos anos, visto que feridas que tinham a cicatrização por segunda intensão com longo tempo de tratamento tem mostrado excelentes resultados com as técnicas atuais. Os fatores fisiológicos dos próprios cães e gatos auxiliam para o sucesso, além dos cuidados anteriormente e após o procedimento são essenciais juntamente com o conhecimento do cirurgião para o sucesso cirúrgico.
Introdução: A doença periodontal é uma das afecções mais presentes na clínica médica de animais de companhia. Há estudos que apontam sua incidência em 70% dos felinos e 80% dos cães acima de dois anos de idade, além de evidenciar maior predisposição de cães de raças pequenas. Apesar da alta prevalência, ainda é uma doença sub-diagnosticada, especialmente por inicialmente não apresentar sinais muito evidentes. É causada pela adesão de bactérias aos dentes numa substância chamada de placa (biofilme formado por bactérias, glicoproteínas da saliva e polissacarídeos). Esse crescimento bacteriano altera a microbiota oral, iniciando um processo de gengivite (fase inicial, caracterizada pela inflamação da gengiva, reversível com profilaxia) que evolui para periodontite (envolve estruturas mais profundas do dente, levando a perda de fixação). A placa bacteriana sofre mineralização pela deposição de elementos salivares, sendo chamada de cálculo dentário ou tártaro. Objetivo: O objetivo do trabalho é fazer uma revisão sobre o assunto pretendendo orientar melhor os profissionais e mostrar a importância do tema, prezando aumentar a qualidade e expectativa de vida dos pacientes. Metodologia: trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica baseada em busca nas plataformas de pesquisa SciELO e Google acadêmico, usando as palavras-chave periodontal, periodontite. Resultados: A doença periodontal é classificada em graus (saudável, gengivite, periodontite leve, periodontite moderada, periodontite grave) de acordo com parâmetros como: aspecto da gengiva, percentual de perda óssea, deposição de cálculo dentário, profundidade do sulco gengival e aspecto radiográfico. Esses parâmetros são aferidos durante consulta odontológica veterinária. Em decorrência disso, podem surgir consequências como fístulas oro-nasais, fraturas patológicas (especialmente mandibulares), lesões oftálmicas, neoplasias, osteomielite, osteonecrose, diabetes mellitus (pelo aumento da resistência insulínica), afecções renais (por conta da deposição de imunocomplexos), entre outras. Conclusão: Em vista disso, se faz importante a conscientização dos tutores desde a primeira consulta sobre a importância da prevenção, indicando a escovação diária dos dentes desde filhotes (o que torna mais fácil, já que os filhotes são mais receptivos a novos hábitos) e consulta periódica com o veterinário. É importante esclarecer os tutores sobre os riscos dessa afecção, e quando necessário encaminhar para o procedimento cirúrgico de limpeza/extração dentária sob anestesia geral.
