The objective of this study was to analyse the population growth of the Atlantic seabob shrimp, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) and to establish its recruitment period in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Monthly samples of the species were collected over four years (2005-06, 2006-07, 2008-09, and 2009-10) through local artisanal fishery. The size of males and females varied from 25.0 to 134.0 mm and 33.0 to 146.0 mm in total length, 6.0 to 30.0 mm and 5.0 to 33.0 mm in carapace length, and 0.3 to 13.8 g and 0.2 to 17.4 g in weight, respectively. The total weight-length relationship was adjusted with the equations W = 0.000008TL 2.9038 (R 2 = 0.9446) (males) and W = 0.000002TL 3.1719 (R 2 = 0.9499) (females). The Von Bertalanffy growth function TL t = TL ∞ (1 − exp −k(t−t 0 ) ) was applied to the data, and the average asymptotic lengths (TL ∞ ) and growth rates (k) were 134.4 ± 6.2 mm and 1.93 ± 0.3 mm for males, and 148.8 ± 3.6 mm and 1.65 ± 0.05 mm for females. The species' average longevity was 2.5 years for males and 2.8 years for females. Males are considered mature when their reach a total length of 66.0 mm and a carapace length of 12.0 mm, while females mature with 109.0 mm total length and 22.0 mm carapace length. In general, the species' recruitment occurred from June to August and from January to May, which partially supports the current legislation to maintain this fishery resource in the region.
This study provides the first data on the population structure of swimming crab Callinectes ornatus Ordway, 1863 bycatch from coastal shrimp fishing in northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (21º 30'-21º 50' S and 41º 05'-41º 07' W). Crabs were collected monthly from April 2006 to March 2007. A total of 5,611 specimens were analyzed, of which 3,951 were males and 1,660 ovigerous and non-ovigerous females. The overall sex ratio (2:1) differ significantly from the expected 1:1 proportion, being the mature males significantly predominant as bycatch in this fishery. The specimens' carapace width and weight varied from 27 to 126 mm (mean: 77.3 ± 12.3 mm) and 1.2 to 128.2 g (mean: 31.0 ± 14.4 g) for males, and 30 to 101 mm (mean: 63.4 ± 9.3 mm) and 1.7 to 66.0 g (mean: 16.4 ± 7.4 g) for ovigerous and non-ovigerous females. Seasonal comparisons did not reveal differences between the number of specimens captured in dry and rainy periods considering both sexes and maturity stages. The size at first maturity was 79 mm for males and 65 mm for females, and the carapace width-weight relationship indicated an alometric pattern for both sexes. The bycatch swimming crabs are locally used as bait, but the capture tendency for a specific sex/age-group can affect this population structure over time.
Siparuna guianensis (Laurales: Siparunaceae) has a terpene-rich essential oil with great potential for larvicides. The poor water miscibility of their compounds makes nano-emulsions of great interest for novel bioactive systems, including for control of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). This species is adapted to urban environments with important role in the epidemiology of some arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya fever, zika, and urban yellow fever. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of nano-emulsification to affect Ae. aegypti larvae. An optimal system was achieved by using a nonionic single surfactant, highlighted by its satisfactory size distribution profile. Moreover, improved larvicidal activity in comparison to bulk essential oil can be observed for the nano-emulsions. The estimated LC50 and LC90 values after 24 h of treatment of larvae with the essential oil were, respectively, 86.5232 and 134.814 µg/ml, while the estimated LC50 and LC90 value after treatment with the nano-emulsion were 24.7572 and 75.2452 µg/ml, respectively. The utilization of a simple technique to produce a fine nano-emulsion opens perspective for further integrative practices of mosquito control and giving value to this Amazon plant species may encourage its sustainable use and contribute to conservation policies.
This study analyzes the infl uences of environmental variables on the weightlength relationship of the penaeid shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri during nine consecutive years (2005 to 2013) in northern Rio de Janeiro State. The main questions raised are: i) Does species relative growth vary along time? and ii) How are the environmental variables sea surface temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a and/or organic matter related to the relative growth? For males, the long-term mean of the allometric coeffi cient stayed <3 (immature: 2.49; mature: 2.91), whereas for females they were >3 (immature: 3.08; mature: 3.10). The sine-consine models highlighted the wave T period in which the allometric coeffi cient values complete one cycle of increase-decrease: 4.72 years and 14.72 years for immatures female and male, respectively; and 9.08 years and 9.98 years for matures male and females, respectively. The relative growth behavior varies in a predictable time scale; however, none of the environmental variables strongly supported the variation.Changes in the relative growth behavior are probably drive by intrinsic mechanisms to maintain the population locally.
Ganglioneuromas (GN) are benign and well-differentiated tumors originated from the sympathetic chain of the neural crest. They can affect any part of the body along the autonomic ganglia, however the two most common sites of presentation are in the retroperitoneal space (32-52%) and posterior mediastinum (39-43%), followed by the cervical region (8-9%) [6]. They are most common in children and young adults, but can occur at any age. They have a greater predilection for females (3:1). They are usually asymptomatic and when present, clinical manifestations are symptoms of compression (epigastric pain, abdominal pain). Most adrenal ganglioneuromas do not have endocrine production, but up to 30% of tumors can secrete testosterone or catecholamines.
