EVALUATION OF HUMAN FACTOR ON THE PARAMETERS OF PUNCTIFORM CORROSION IN COMERCIAL COUPONS AbstractCorrosion is defined as a group of phenomena of progressive deterioration of materials due to electrochemical reactions. In certain metallic installations such processes are monitored through mass loss coupons. When this phenomenon is evidenced by the formation of cavities, with little uniform loss, it is called pitting corrosion. ASTM G46-94 (2005) and NACE RP0775 (2005) standards recommends characterizing the pitting corrosion using density, depth, size and rate of corrosion pitting. However, this is a subjective evaluation and the human factor can have significant influence on the achievement of results. In this study, commercial corrosion coupons were exposed to corrosion in immersion camera during three months having potable water as fluid. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the human factor in pitting corrosion parameters. A comparative analysis of the results was obtained by three different operators. The differences found were significant, however, such variations do not change the classification level of the coupons according to the rules.
EVALUATION OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, PITTING AND INCLUSION DENSITY OF MASS LOSS COUPONS AbstractCorrosion is defined as the group of phenomena of deterioration of materials due to reactions between the material and environment. In metallic installations such processes are monitored through mass loss coupons. When the attack is evidenced by the formation of cavities with little uniform loss, it is called pitting corrosion. Corrosion monitoring companies buy coupons from different suppliers, but it's slightly observed about the kind of process during manufacturing, the chemical composition, the microstructure, and other parameters that can influence the confiability of the results. This study aims to evaluate the performance of carbon steel coupons, relating chemical composition, inclusions and pitting density present in corrosion coupons. The characterization was performed using chemical and microscopic analysis. The coupons were tested for corrosion loop having aerated water as fluid. To determine the density, area and depth of corrosion pitting, were adopted the NACERP0775 and ASTM G46-94 standards. A direct relation between the sulfur content and density of inclusions was observed and, consequently, a direct relation between the pitting density on the coupons after corrosion loop test.
