Introdução: A pandemia da COVID-19 é um dos maiores desafios de saúde pública, visto que acarretou mudanças na rotina pessoal, social e na mobilidade urbana da população.Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto das recomendações de saúde para o controle da COVID-19 sobre as hospitalizações por doenças respiratórias no Brasil.Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo ecológico, utilizando informações disponíveis na base de dados do Departamento de Informática do SUS. Foram utilizados dados de indivíduos de todas as idades e sexo que internaram devido às doenças do aparelho respiratório no SUS, em todas as regiões brasileiras. Estes dados foram obtidos de março até agosto de cada ano, percorrendo o período de 2015-2019 e de 2020 (medidas para o controle da COVID-19). Para fins estatísticos, utilizou-se análise descritiva.Resultados: Totalizaram-se 3.317.081 milhões de hospitalizações no Brasil por doenças do aparelho respiratório entre 2015 e 2019, correspondendo uma média de 663.416 internações/ano (taxa: 41,57/10 mil habitantes). Embora pareça haver estabilidade (oscilação <±15%) neste indicador ao longo de 2015/2019, observou-se expressiva redução (absoluta: -50% até -65%; taxa: -48,22% e -61,93%) destas hospitalizações em todas as regiões do país, quando analisado com o mesmo período do ano de 2020 (medidas de controle da COVID-19). As localidades com maiores reduções nas taxas foram a Sudeste, Centro-Oeste e a Norte. Além disso, estes desfechos foram mais elevados nos homens e no grupo etário idoso.Conclusão: As medidas de saúde recomendadas para o controle da COVID-19 causaram redução das hospitalizações no SUS por doenças do aparelho respiratório no Brasil.
