A combination of spectral and velocity analysis, using an ultrasonic pulse technique, has been performed on two lithologies of building stone: limestone and sandstone. Measurements of compressional and shear wave velocities have been made and the results obtained compared with the data provided from analyses of the frequency spectra so obtained from these rocks. It appears that the centre frequency and attenuation calculated from the frequency spectra provide useful quantitative measures of rock quality which augments that obtained from measurements of velocity alone, especially in saturated specimens. The potential value of using the centre frequency and attenuation as references to study the progressive change of rock quality during weathering has yet to be assessed.
SUMMARYThe results of a series of laboratory tests, carried out on the bioclastic limestone used in the construction of the Murcia cathedral, are presented in this paper in order to evaluate the efficiency of certain treatment products, that eventually could be applied to that stone for improving their state of conservation. Additionally, the behaviour under accelerated ageing tests of non treated samples and the treated ones with the different products employed -ethyl silicate, oligomeric polisiloxane and poliurethane-, is compared.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
