Summary Pyridoxin as a transaminase co‐enzyme and the effect of parenteral administration of the co‐enzyme in the horse on transaminase and leucinaminopeptidase activity Intramuscular administration of pyridoxin to horses in a dosage of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 mg./kg. bodyweight produced no increased activity of glutamate‐pyruvate‐transaminase. Pyridoxin increased the activity of glutamate‐oxalacetate‐transaminase but the increase was not proportional to the amount of pyridoxin given. Leucinaminopeptidase activity was unaffected by pyridoxin. The very slight rise in bile pigments during the trial periods corresponded to normal daily fluctuations of bilirubin in horse blood. Normal pyridoxin values in serum were: horse 16.2 ± 2.69 μg/100 ml.; six‐month old calves 9.9 ± 1.27 μg/100 ml.; pigs weighing 60 kg. 8.4 ± 0.81 μg/100 ml.; two‐month old chicks 35.0 ± 1.6 μg/100 ml. The level in man found by the authors was 9.65 ± 1.3 μg/100 ml.
Summary Studies on the cerebro‐spinal fluid of the dog and horse The C. S. F. was examined from 58 dogs and 25 horses by means of suboccipital puncture. The protein content was examined by turbidity and colloidal reactions and the cell content determined. The C. S. F. pressure in the dogs was low and could not be satisfactorily measured. The pressure in horses ranged from 210 to 358 mm. of water. Xanthochromia occurred mainly in the C. S. F. of horses with hepatocerebral syndromes. The cell count of the C. S. F. in healthy dogs ranged from 0 to 15/3, while in dogs with a clinical picture of meningitis and meningo‐encephalitis the range was from 36/3 to 4000/3. Pleocytosis was found in horses with cerebral haemorrhage, hydrocephalus, bulbar paralysis and meningo‐encephalitis. In pathological conditions occurring outside the C. N. S. there was no increase in cells in the C. S. F. Turbidity and colloidal tests in healthy dogs were negative. The C. S. F. of healthy horses gave positive Pandy and Weichbrodt tests but colloidal tests were negative. In dogs with inflammatory and degenerative cerebral conditions the protein reactions in the C. S. F. were positive. In horses with histologically detectable inflammatory and degenerative brain conditions and simultaneous pleocytosis, the reactions to the tests of Pandy, Ross‐Jones and Weichbrodt were less strongly positive. The colloidal tests were more markedly positive....
