Para la presente investigación se utilizó un formulario precodificado, que se envió a las 507 instituciones que atienden partos en Colombia, identificadas por medio del subsistema de información de recursos institucionales para la atención hospitalaria del Ministerio de Salud.De los 507 formularios enviados se recibieron correctamente contestados 277, que constituyen el universo de la investigación.Los resultados de la investigación permiten determinar las siguientes conclusiones y recomendaciones:—Evaluar, dotar y organizar los niveles de atención materno-infantil, de acuerdo a la regionalización y a la clasificación del riesgo.—Normar las técnicas y procedimientos en forma unificada, tanto en la enseñanza como en la prestación de los servicios.—Supervisar y evaluar las normas de técnicas y procedimientos por medio de comités regionales de evaluación.—Manejar con criterio científico la regionalización, dotación de elementos y equipos en las diferentes instituciones de acuerdo a su nivel de atención.
Los Programas de Planificación Familiar se iniciaron en forma tímida y como actividad particular en el año de 1964, a través de una clínica fundada en Bogotá por la Asociación Pro bienestar de la Familia Colombiana -PROFAMILIA- con fondos proporcionados principalmente por la Federación Internacional de Paternidad Planeada (IPPF); para 1966 la Asociación Colombiana de Facultades de Medicina (ASCOFAME), inicia programas de capacitación en planificación familiar para médicos, vinculados a las Instituciones de Gobierno y algunos años más tarde a través de su división de Medicina Social y Población ofrece los servicios de planificación familiar en el llamado post-parto, principalmente en Hospitales Universitarios y luego logra su ampliación progresiva hasta alcanzar 31 Hospitales de Gobierno que funcionaban como Regionales.
La Atención Materna desde el año 1969, de acuerdo con las poiíticas de ampliación de coberturas, venía realizando actividades programáticas por personal médico y paramédico, especialmente en el área de control prenatal y atención del puerperio.
Los programas de Planificación Familiar en Colombia nacen en el año 1965, dada la iniciativa de dos instituciones del sector privado como son Profamilia y Ascofame y unas pocas del sector oficial.
