A n m r i c a l scheme I S developed t o compute integral c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o f the 2D wavenumber spectrum o f radar ocean wave images c o l l e c t e d i n polar coordinates (range and azimuth). The d i r e c t i o n a l spectrum c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s include mean wavenmer, mean d i r e c t i o n , m i n i m and maximum rms wavenumers and p r i n c i p a l d i r e c t i o n . The method e x p l o i t s the fundamental r e l a t i o n s between the m n t s of the 1D wavenumber spectrum in a given d i r e c t i o n and those o f the 2D wavenumber spectrun; a least square technique has been used t o f i t these r e l a t i o n s w i t h radar data. The numerical procedure was checked w i t h a r t i f i c i a l l y created images. I t was also successfully applied t o obtain integral c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o f radar ocean wave images i n natural conditions.
